My biggest fear about pursuing an IM residency is not being able to attain a Allergy/Immuno or Heme/Onc fellowship in the end. Anyone have any words to ease my concern or affirm this fear and call it a legitimate concern???
I DO NOT WANT TO BE AN INTERNIST MY ENTIRE LIFE!!! please help!
Are fellowships difficult to attain for us SGU grads?
Anyone know anyone who successfully attained an allergy/immuno or heme/onc fellowship??
thanks in advance,
sk

Getting into a fellowship depends more on your performance during residency than what school you went to. You should apply to a competetive/well-known IM residency program to increase your chances. Someone I know who is applying for IM fellowships right now said that his Step 3 score was taken into consideration so it might pay to do well on that exam.
Heme/Onc isn't that hard to get, as far as I know. At the two hospitals I rotated in, plenty of residents matched into that field. The difficult fellowships were Cardiology and Gastroenterology.
Good Luck.

like sree said, fellowship attainment is more dependent on where you go for residency (and what you do there).
while it possible to get fellowships from a residency program that doesn't have your specific fellowship, your chances are greatly improved if your residency program has Allergy or Hem/Onc (either uni or community)- there will be people in the field who know other PDs and there will be research going on in the field as well.

a couple of things.
A/I is easy. Heme/onc moderately difficult. Most people get fellowships. But there is no guarentee.
Also remember, you WILL be an internist even a medonc/AI. You wont be giving up a lot of those roles. PLus you'll have in pt service. Make sure to talk with mentors about future careers. Having said that, do decently and you'll probably get a spot.

I agree with Steph -Hemeonc and Allergy requires you to do alot of the same stuff you would do as an internist. Both are attainable for SGU grads, esp if you are already a resident there and/or the head of your internal medicine department is influential.
