Is it possible to get into SABA right our of highschool?
I have not yet started university here and I do not want to because it is a waste of time and money . (as gettinginto med school here is one of the toughest things in this world).
I have a average of 70% coming out of highschool (due to some bad courses).
I plan to apply for the may 08 session.

I can not find anything..
Applicants from the United States or Canada who are U.S. citizens or have permanent visas are expected to have a minimum of three years of undergraduate studies or equivalent to 90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours in an accredited college or university. A Baccalaureate degree is recommended but not required. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree or higher. Premedical studies should include the following courses
so im guessing the answer is no??

College is not a waste of time and money. You should go to college then try to apply to a US or Canadian school, and if you don't get in then you can apply to Saba. That way you don't have to deal with this IMG bull****.
Plus you grow up a lot during college, which will help you to deal with Saba.

rules of this forum prevent me from insulting you too severely but if i could i would
but to apply to med school one has to take a pre med curriculum, such as orgo, physics, chem, bio, etc; IN COLLEGE. You must be high if your even entertaining the idea of applying to any legitimate med school out of high school and if so, you would fail the saba drug test

it must be. Clearly you have to have university experience. Cell biology, Genetics, Orgo. You just dont learn that stuff in high school.

there are med schools in india that you can go to right out of high school. But i think it takes a little longer
i think the majority of medschools in india start outta highschool. my dads friends when he came outta highschool in iran also all started after highschool. it was a six year program though

Don't the UK have a 6 year med program? Most programs are highly competitive and a 70 probably will not cut it.

hey - I agree with most of the posts here - I think it is better to go through college and take all the pre-med science courses or take even more sciences if you like so that you will have more knowledge and background. Plus i think college does not only give you background in all these courses, the experience itself gives you a chance to mature and learn from the mistakes that you make. I used to complain about how college is waste of time when I can start med school right out of high school - BUT seriously when I think about it now, I would not have known ANYTHING or learned anything if I had started med school right out of high school - maturity level is just not there.
I know that you feel anxious and you want to get started right away, but I think it is worth waiting - BUT if you feel like that you are mature enough and you cannot wait at all for another four years to start med school, there are med schools in India who take you right out of high school which was already mentioned in one of these posts by someone. But whatever the decision you make, i want to wish you good luck and I hope you make the right decision for yourself!!! I hope this post was helpful!! take care! :)

Also keep in mind that some state licensing requires college credit to obtain licensing. Below you will find the licensing requirements for Texas below.
§163.2. Full Texas Medical License.
(3) have completed 60 semester hours of college courses as defined under §163.1(11) of this title;
§163.1. Definitions.
(11) Sixty (60) semester hours of college courses--60 semester hours of college courses other than in medical school that are acceptable to The University of Texas at Austin for credit on a bachelor of arts degree or a bachelor of science degree; the entire primary, secondary, and premedical education required in the country of medical school graduation, if the medical school is located outside the United States or Canada; or substantially equivalent courses as determined by the board.
I am not trying to discourage your decision. Do your research and planning so that you can be successful in the future. Good Luck with your decisions!

Even if it was possible to enter a med school out of high school, I would not recommend it as an option. Medical school is very demanding, more than college and much much much more than high school. There is no way a person with just a high school degree could function in a medical school environment. You NEED College in order to prepare you for medical school!!!
Hey Experienced, what do you think about this? Let's hear from you!

Virtually every country in the world has high school students go directly into med school, EXCEPT north America. Why u may ask? Well research the history of the American Medical Association, specifically the initiatives they made to make doctors look more prestigious and everything will start making sense.
Random fact: Back in mid 1800s, Harvard medical school would not test their med students for fear that they might fail the exam.

If u are determined to go to medschool after highschool and feel you have the majority to take it on, try exploring other countries beside Can and US, like European, Australia and Asian countries. If u just love the Caribbean, shop around and you'll see plenty of schools that will love to take your money, er i mean assist your academic needs.
UMKC in Kansas City has a 6 year program. Saba students rotate next to their students at St. Lukes.
Personally, I feel that the majority of students right out of high school (and for that matter, college) are not mature enough for medical school. But, hey, I'm just an old guy with a rather biased opinion!

I was a classmate with most of this students...and my best friend graduated from UMKC medical school. I cannot tell you how many of them drops out. out of 120 students...talk about them losing 50-60 by the 3rd year of 6. They complete their undergraduate requirement [90 credit hrs] in 2 years...the remaining 30 comes from courses taking in the Medical school...starting from the 3rd year. In our first semester of college...I was enrolled in 15hrs per semester ...while most of the medical students in my class had 30hrs... I am talking about Bio 1, Chem 1, Physics 1, English 1, Calculus, and General Psych all at the same time. And guess what...we were straight outta high school.
True experience...Personal friend and classmate...started doing drugs to stay up to study every night. By year 3 of 6...was hooked on drugs...flunked out with over 100k in debt.
All I am saying is that...some people can handle it...but being 18yrs old with 30hrs is not a joke.
My advice to you is to attend college..major in something that you like...have fun...pass your classes...and then think about medical school.
Average age of most medical school graduate is 26-28...so you will not be that much behind...if age is what you are worrying about.

Hey comoregie, how do you like Saba University? what do you want to your residency in? and how realistic is it for someone from Saba to do a residency in Surgery or other competitive field? I was told by an alumni from Saba that it is very difficult getting a good residency. That in order to get a good residency you need like a 250-260 on the part 1, because residency programs will prefer someone from the US with a 215 on part 1 over someone from the carribean (Saba) with like a 230? I was kind of worried when they said this, so I wanted to see how true is this, and how realistic is it for a student to get a good residency and what type of scores do students need?
Anyone please help...

Saba is what you make of it...if you study hard..it pays off. I only ran into few topics on the board that we did not cover in Basic Science...so I believe that it is a great school. As for residency...I believe that lots of factors plays a huge role. From who you know...to your relationship with co-workers and attending. Dont get me wrong..I believe that having a good score will open lots of doors for ya... but do not guarantee ya anything. Saba students have done pretty well on step 1...and most good Saba students ends up getting good placement on residency. [Check out the website]. I do not see that much difference b/w our Match and The University of Missouri Kansas City.
If you are the type of person...that will only be happy in getting residency in something like Neurosurgery, Ortho, Ent, and Plastic at IV league...then rethink about attending Foreign Medical School. The chances of students getting this spot is very rare...not just for FMG...but also for U.S students. I think that they are less than 150 Neurosurgery spot each year...compare to Internal Medicine 4 to 5k.
As for getting a surgery spot...it is possible...I know a Saba grad at this very moment in KC...that is going into his 3rd year. I guarantee ya that he did not get over 230. Dont believe the hype. Also Know a guy doing Ob/Gyn in GA...so getting good residency is doable.
I believe that you are the only one that can make your own decision based on your future goal.
Saba will give you the chance to earn an M.D...but what you do with it...is up to you.

thanks comoregie! just a last quick question how realistic is it for someone to do well on the part 1? is it very difficult to get a score like 230-240? is that like say getting a 1600 on the SAT or is that doable? thanks for your help. that was very helpful! :)

I am literally struck mute by the thought that we could get students less mature than some that we get now
