OK so i finished first Semester at Semmelweis..... :D

Here is a little bit about me ... I have a Bachelors in Physics and started a MS in BIO , went for 1 semester quit started studying Analytical Philosophy and decided on Medical School. I am married and came over here with my wife and my best friend who was also attending Semmelweis .

I arrived Aug 27th about a week before school started and we stayed in the Marriot on the Danube (wonderful ) .
Recommended : Call College International the first or second day you are here . We called them our first day , met with their housing people then next day and found an apartment. It was so nice to be settled 5 days before school started.

The first thing i noticed about Hungary was the people seem slightly pissed off all the time as if they have something barely in their ***. I am from Texas and am used to Southern Hospitality ....dont look to hard for it here.. if you are a foreigner the easiest way to be spotted is laughing and smiling. It took us a while to settle in and find everything we wanted so get ready for the initial shock of Hungary not being like Home. We could not find Peanut Butter, Weed, Ingrediants for Mexican food lol. The city is pretty cool , i don't go out at all so don't ask me about the nightlife or clubs. The metro so far is the best thing . it seemingly goes everwhere and runs fast so gettting around the city is really easy once you learn the metro and trams. (that should be your first project or you will spend hours walking around)

Overview: The education so far has seemed pretty stellar. They do not skip much in the basic sciences and have added more than i remember from when i took them ( a long time ago ) lol . you will take Physics, Biology, Chemistry, PE , Hungarian, Latin, AnatomyHistologyEmbyrology

During the semester you will take a barrage of midterms around the 5-7th week and again about 6weeks later. The first midterm period was terribly stressful because it does not seem like anybody knows how it is going to be graded or how much it will weigh on your final grade.
Hint: This is just my impression, but pass your midterms . TRY not to fail any. they do not count for your final grade at all ... in all my classes i just ended up with the grade i received in the final. But in some classes it is mandatory to pass the midters to take the Semifinal.

Finals ..... USE THE TOPIC LISTS PROVIDED TO YOU. Especially in Anatomy. i found that in anatomy almost everything you covered or the professors thought they may have covered 1 year are candidates for test questions ...so just know the topic lists inside and out . you get to schedule your finals how you want so do it how you are comfortable. if you fail a final you get 3 more shots at it ...and if you don't get it done by the end of the semester there are exam periods all over the place to get your shit done . so for the people who say if you fail a semester you repeat the year type stuff must be smoking rock or got shafted because that is not how i see but then again ..i have not made it through a year yet. lol

So in total i would say Semmelweis is a fine place to be. the language is terrible, weather sucks (compared to Texas), Food is bad (pastries are wonderful imo), people are mean ... but in the end i came here to be a doctor so i keep that in mind whenever i have too. If you have the motivation just apply. Come see the school. Meet the students and in the end it does not seem too bad , because you will be in the same boat as everybody else.
IF you have questions Just shoot them at me and i will see if i can help you out

Carl,
Its very nice to read your realistic assesment of 1st semester experience in Semmelweis.
Avoid_Hungary!!! (believe he attends Semmelweis and J.H. from PECS have been writing their own thoughts about the situations in Hungarian Med. Schools on other threads. Any comments you may have, thanks

Carl,
Hopefully, I would be at DOTE this September. But J.H and AVOID_HUNGARY have been trying their best to discourage us (prospective students) from applying. They think they're saving our lives. What do you think?

Carl forgot to mention about the business of buying and selling papers with the answers to the questions of the topic list (or getting directly the questions you will be asked), also he doesn't mention of the private lessons with the assistant professors (who can influence your examiners in the oral exams).

If somebody is willing to pay all that, then Semmelweis is a joke to pass.

If not, then be sure that if you lose ONE subject you cannot go to the next semester, you have to repeat the year. They also *COUNT* how many times you failed. Carl didn't mention that either. Thats another way to take the money from you in case you try to prove that you are the best and you want to avoid paying under the table.

The hungarian medical universities are money-making universities, there is no education here, do yourself and your family a favour -- apply somewhere else.

...and what universities are not money making institutions? The rate of tuition increase in the states is far greater than inflation. Your dissatisfaction of hungarian schools has been noted. I'm sure they're not for everyone but most were satisfied with their choice.

"most were satisfied with their choice"

That is a lie.

I am just sorry that history will repeat itself, and many uninformed students will come to Hungary and after a while find out exactly what the others (who were already there before them) warned them about ending up after 1-2 years looking for other universities to get out of that country as fast as possible. What a waste...

Seems like two big concerns you have is buying and selling of papers for questions and answers?
Pl. explain is this done by the University or the private individuals who are in business to make money for example KAPLAN and FALCON in US and few others also sell Q'S and A's for USMLE's.This is all business but you don't have to buy those to learn or pass your tests.
Secondly, private tuition is also given by individual teachers(This is done all over the world by teachers to earn extra income)Semmelweis does not require or force people to take those to learn or to pass your tests.
As far as your thinking that all universities in Hungary are there to make money.Any business person with common sence will tell you that you do not make money by failing and dropping people but the only and only way is by keeping and helping them for 6 years. As in business, churning people or accounts create losses versus retaining people and accounts for a long term.
Also, you are advising and telling new people not to apply to Hungarian Medical Schools, where are you moving to or why are you still there if its all that bad???

Semmelweis does not require or force people to take those to learn or to pass your tests.

That's another lie.

The people that are giving the lessons know personally the examiner, so the students who manage to get lessons with them are considered that they have passed that specific subject...and thus..they can safely continue their studies...So no late night studying for those students and no headache at all...if that is not corruption then what is?

The notes generated from those private lessons are sold at a very high price.

All the others who didn't pay have to repeat the year or are completely out of the university because they have exceeded the number of times they can fail during their studies. Not only the universities here are corrupt their system sucks also.

I am looking for another university, but I am taking my time to look more closely now that I have experience, asking all the hard questions, so I won't get victimized again.

Well AVOID_HUNGARY do you not think that maybe taking the private lessons actually aid in learning the required material and thus helping the student to pass? and of course the notes to the lessons will be sold at a high price that is how they make money by teaching using notes that the tutor has created. If I was a tutor and took my time in creating notes, I would want to be paid for my efforts why not? If you are just bitter because the students that take private lessons (thus study more) are passing maybe you should invest in a lesson yourself or better yet study harder. Medical school is designed to be hard and you should appreciate that because the last thing that I want is a student the got to coast through a medical school to give me advice about my health.
Can you agree that if you study hard and therefore know all of the answers to all of the questions asked on exams you will pass and do very well in school?

carlphys (http://www.valuemd.com/members/carlphys.html) can you tell me if you have been mistreated so far? or if you have been robbed of a point for an answer that you know to be correct?

:confused:Well..if anybody needs any questions answered i can help but as far as taking out extra loans to buy off professors...i did not see that anywhere, so i would not plan on that being your ticket through medical school you actually have to show up and pass exams and for the most part the professors seem rather distant and not the type to be giving private lessons. And by topic list i really do mean a topic list ........the sort of point of them is to answer them as if they were questions....to prepare you for the oral exams

For the most part the oral exams are pretty tough ..they expect you to know most of what is covered in class and anything is fair game , but if you know enough of the information to pass a written exam most likely you will pass the oral...sometimes it does not work out like that and you fail knowing more or pass knowing less, but any test is like that

As far as mistreated lol everybody takes the same grief as me and nobody seems special here so it is fair in that respect ..ok laters

Mister you asked me:

My answer is:
Nope I don't agree. Knowing all the answers to the questions will get you through written exams, but hungarian medical universities have *oral* exams.

That is how they scam you, through the oral exams.

In that case, if you really want to get a hungarian medical degree from the university you have chosen you should spend your time to find who to pay that can influence your oral exam.

Hungarian universities are a scam.

You should find a university that does written exams mostly to avoid this situation.

Howdy,

I am from Houston, Texas. I was going to come to Hungary this fall but due to my work I had to stay in Texas for another year. I had couple of questions about student loans from you and I was wondering if you can help me. my email address is; arashmaadani@gmail.com .

extra bitterness, unpleasant words, anger, and ill-will are signs of immaturity. we need more well structured arguments from the unhappy students on this forum.

from my understanding only 60-65% of the students graduate from the semmelweis, am I correct about this? so I am not shocked that they weed out the students in early years. it is what so called boot camp medical schools, ones who make it are the doctors....it is a different system, it is very different from what we have here in the U.S. as far as I know, so my question is; did you know that before you go?
