I've read mixed things on buying or renting a car on the island. I see that some students are trying to sell them from time to time. Have any of your student coordinators mentioned a good place to buy or rent one from? I don't know a ton about cars and don't want to get stuck with a lemon so I'll probably lean towards renting for the 16 months on the island but want to find a legitimate place. Anyone else planning on getting a car?

everyone i know who has bought a car at a reasonable price has had problems. the problem is that you're responsible for your own repairs, which wouldn't be as bad if we had the luxury of time. plus its impossible to find the parts you need since most of the cars for sale were made in another decade. my friend's car broke and we were driving from junkyard to junkyard to find the part he needed. he ended up ordering it from ebay, but will be shafted on shipping and customs charges.

we're renting a cheapo kia which came out to like 8000EC for the year. the guy we're renting it from takes care of oil changes, tire changes, repairs, whatever. the only thing we're responsible for is damage to the exterior.

what is that, like $250 a month US? Seems reasonable. Mind sharing the contact information?

Also, rahulb, where are you looking? Are you able to look anywhere on-line? We rented a corolla while visiting the island in early December. It wasn't bad but you felt it on more than one occasion hitting the holes and swerving to avoid goats! No major complaints though.
