I've heard that residency in the States is one-year less compared to Canada. Is that true? So if family practice is 2 yrs here, then it's only 1 yr in the U.S.?

Can someone tell me how long the other residencies will take? I know Anaesthesiology is 4 yrs here, so is it 3 in the States?

Neurology?
General Surgery?
Internal med?

And I'd be grateful if someone can explain what fellowships are, since a lot of people seem to want to get these after their residencies are done.

Thanks a lot folks!

I am not sure about lengh compared to Canada, but here are the lengths of some specialties in the US:

Internal Medicine 3 years
Family Practice 3 years
Neurology 4 years (I think)
General Surgery 5 years
Anesthesiology 4 years
OB/GYN 4 years

Fellowships are advanced training within a field. For example, Internal Medicine fellowships are GI, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, etc.

Surgeons have vascular, colorectal, etc

Anesthesiologists have Pain, Critical care, Peds, etc.

Thanks a lot Mike! I had no idea family medicine took 3 years, as my family physician only did 2. He told me it took him 6 years altogther to get his license (4yrs med, 2 yrs rez). I guess Canadian residency is about the same as U.S. residency then, in terms of length. Thanks again for clearing that stuff up. :D

Beaware if you want to go back to canada, they may not accept you residency that you may have done in the US. It depends on the residency. Most residencies are longer in Canada then in the US, you will have to look at the specific residency. FP is only 2 yr in Canad but 3 in the US.
