i was just wondering if it were possible to do rotations at an affiliated hospital that are not listed as available to auc students. for example, on auc's website they say students can take ob/gyn, peds and psych at mt sinai in chicago..but would it be possible to do other rotations there? im just confused cause some people say you can do rotations at non-affiliated hospitals, wouldnt this be the same thing kinda?

i believe your core rotations have to be done at an auc affiliated hospital. not all auc affiliated hospitals offer all cores

i see..so lets say an AUC affiliated hospital offers cores that are not listed on the website, would it be possible to do them there?

it is not an issue if AUC lets you...it is an issue for licensing

for some states you are required to do all CORE rotations at affiliated hospitals meaning AUC must have a contract for that rotation and therefore AUC does not let you do core rotation outside of their core affiliation

Another reason might also be whether all of the rotations at a hospital are greenbook, and this also applies to licensing. Basically, to my knowledge, all AUC rotations are Greenbook, but this does not necessarily apply to other Caribbean schools.

Here is a thread about the greenbook definition:

you can go to any hospital for electives. as far as cores, if you manage to get an affiliation signed for those core rotations that auc does not have a contract for, more power to you. however, its a major uphill battle.

I just spoke with AUC clinical advisor. No other cores are offered other than stated. But you can do electives and hopefully in 2009 they should more sites in chicago - but that is a chance you will have to take.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think you can also do the required Family Med rotation at Mt. S.

If you want to do as much as you can in Chicago consider doing IM and GS first at another location and then finishing the remaining cores and all 4th year electives in Chicago. As far as I know your options for IM and GS in one location are NYC, Baltimore, CT, Ohio, and AL. If auc had 1/2 of 3rd year cores in my home town I'd jump at the chance to make the 6 month sacrifice of doing IM and GS away. But that's just me.....
