Hey,

How important is MCAT? Can a student get in with undergrad degree and premed requirements, and a lot of hospital/health care experience.

Thanks.

It's compulsory, as in there's no way around it. This is true if you're interested in the 4-year program. Obviously, MCAT scores are not required of 6-year applicants.

Hope that helped.

Thanks for your reply.

Do you guys have clinicals in US like Caribbean schools after the 1st two years(as long as the student pass step 1). Do we have to take the USMLE after the 1st two years in order to get into 3rd year like American and Caribbean schools. What about preparations for USMLES as far as the Curriculum goes, like any MCQ based questions?
Are they approved for Fafsa(student aid for Americans) their english 4 year program esp? Are their any foreign students like American, Canadian, Indian-Pakistani, Chinese students etc., How are the living conditions racism, food, electricity, study condition dorms for off campus base etc., and like in Hungarian med school if you fail 1 subject they make you repeat the whole year is that true to Poland as well? Do a lot of students(foreign) repeat any year of medical school at JU, so the school can make more money? Does the English program have 100% english-speaking capable professors. In other words is JU just out there to rip off money from foreign students like the Hungarian universities.

Thanks again for your help it's really appreciated a great deal. I'm trying to make my decisions by asking questions from the people, who actually know first hand that whats going on in these great schools.

We are required to take year 3 (our core clinicals) in Poland. Subsequent to that, we can complete elective rotations in the US, Canada, UK, or Mars ... as long as you independently arrange it with the hosting institution and provide proper documentation back to JU.

Do we have to take the USMLE after the 1st two years in order to get into 3rd year like American and Caribbean schools.

Yes, you must take the USMLE Step 1 after year 2, though I'm not sure you have to pass it to enter year 3. I'm certain you must pass it to graduate though.

What about preparations for USMLES as far as the Curriculum goes, like any MCQ based questions?

The vast majority of our exams, bar practicals, are in MCQ format. I suppose the idea with this testing philosophy is to better prepare the student for the USMLE but, as I've yet to take it, I cannot comment on its effectiveness.

Are they approved for Fafsa(student aid for Americans) their english 4 year program esp?

The 4 and 6 year English Programs at Jagiellonian University are eligible for FAFSA loans.

Are their any foreign students like American, Canadian, Indian-Pakistani, Chinese students etc.,

We have students from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, and South Africa in the first year class. In the 6-year program there are Norwegians, Swedes, and some from India (I think).

How are the living conditions racism, food, electricity, study condition dorms for off campus base etc.

Living conditions are fine; I have no complaints. There are all types of food available on Krakow. Electricity? We got it! Dorms are pretty nice as dorms go. In fact, of the first years who moved into the dorms in August, very few have actually moved out. We are too busy and too comfortable here to really even care.

and like in Hungarian med school if you fail 1 subject they make you repeat the whole year is that true to Poland as well?

You fail an exam, you get a retake. You fail a retake, typically you arrange for an oral exam with the professor. You fail the oral exam, you retake the class (not the whole year). Now, you may run into some problems if you fail a class that is a prerequisite for other classes (ie You must first pass histology to take pathomorphology). In this case, you may not have to repeat a whole year of classes, but you may find yourself graduating a year late. The moral of the story: you're given three chances to pass ... make it happen or pay the consequences.

Do a lot of students(foreign) repeat any year of medical school at JU, so the school can make more money?

Students repeat classes either because they didn't study adequately or were simply not qualified to be here in the first place. Contrary to rumors propagated by some on this board, schools (or at least my school) will not fail you to make more money.

Does the English program have 100% english-speaking capable professors.

The professors speak English ... some very well, some not as well. It should be remembered that most, if not all, of the lecturers here learn English as their second, sometimes third language. Therefore, an accent is to be expected. For anyone who went to a North American university, this should not be an issue, considering the amount of accents we've no doubt encountered during our undergraduate chemistry, physics, and biology courses. Some of the best professors I've encountered here are those who have, comparatively speaking, a somewhat weak command of English. Their commitment to teaching and mentoring students simply transcends any language difficulties.

In other words is JU just out there to rip off money from foreign students like the Hungarian universities.

If this were the case, I assure you, I would have no reservations whatsoever about saying so. However, like I've mentioned before, I've never gotten the slightest inkling that I'm being "cheated" out of money or what have you. JU is a man-made entity and, as such, is not perfect. Complainers will complain regardless of where they attend school. In my humble opinion, those who do best here are those who work hard, adapt to the system, and take care of business.
