Most electives are 4 weeks. However, if you are setting up the elective, it may be more or less. For example, I recently finished an IM Sub-I. The length was 5 wks because that was the length of time that their residents were on that rotation. Another example.. In Feb I'll be doing a surgery elective that I set-up. It will also be 5 wks b/c that was the amount of time I needed to fill before the next elective started. I think the rule is that the elective should be a minimum of 4 wks and a max or 8. This may have changed, but it is what I remember..
If you happen to finish your 72 wks early, you can do extra rotations. However, like most things in life, it may come with a price. In other words, if the hospital will be charging for the rotation, Saba will be charging you..

Hope this helps. Enjoy the holidays.

Salutations:

Yes, most of the electives are 4 weeks. I believe family medicine is 6 weeks. Saba states that this is an elective but it's a required elective. For some reason or other, some of the students I rotated with were telling me that they did a radiology elective for 2 weeks. So perhaps the amount of time depends on the hospital.
