Hello,
I am doing IM at Union in Baltimore. I will be there for IM (3 months) plus 1 or 2 electives at Union hopefully (so another 1-2 months), starting in April.
Can anyone give me suggestions as to where to stay? i would like to stay near the hospital if not right next to it, but not pay an armload of money (since it would be less than 6 months, proximity, etc..). I have been told there are some places that are subsidized by the hopsital? And what about the Marylander apartments? Has anyone stayed there and if so, how is it?
Any advice is appreciated
Thank you
thealchemist
PS: is UNION hospital next to the JHU undergraduate campus, or is it downtown next to the JHU medical school complex?

Congrats on doing rotations at Union! You are going to get one of the best, if not THE best IM core that AUC offers. Union is right near the JHU undergrad campus, not the medical school/hospital (that is in a TERRIBLE area lol).
There's a ton of places to stay in Baltimore. A lot of students stayed at The Marylander when I was there, but I also heard a lot of complaints that the place was pretty run down and overpriced. It is located right across the street from the hospital. Now my advice is to stay a bit farther away from the hospital and get your money's worth. Towson is a great area and the rent is significantly cheaper. It's about 30 mins to the hospital in the morning due to traffic, but normally it should only take about 15-20mins. Parkville is also about the same distance and a cheaper place to stay as well. With both of those you'll get more for your money and they are located in a more suburban area. Lutherville/Timonium is one more option, but it's a bit farther. If you really want to stay in the city, Mt. Vernon is pretty close to the hospital (but not walking distance). It's about 10 mins by car. It's a really cool area with lots of shops and restaurants. Rent there is pretty cheap and there are a lot of amazing buildings in the area. Also, in the heart of downtown Charles Towers has 1br apts for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure if they offer less than 1yr lease. It's worth checking out. Getting around Baltimore isn't hard, but you'll need to bring a car. Also, I'd advise you to do Psych at Spring Grove in Baltimore as well. You get free housing (and the housing is really nice) and the experience is excellent. Can't lose on that one. Anyway, let me know if you need any more info.

thank you for the advice. actually i used to live right opposite JHU in the apt housing (before they renovated it, and before they created a "charles village" when it was seriously dangerous in that area). its nice to know they cleaned up that area. it was a hellhole when i lived there. so i know the area in general.

what i wanted to also know specifically is, is there any housing that the hospital subsidises for its students and/or residents?
a friend of mine who is doing a rotation at union at this moment, said he lucked out by getting subsidised housing for residents right next to the hospital (250/month for a 2bedroom apt furnished). i wonder if that is the Marylander he is in currently?
okay thanks

I'm not exactly sure and I don't want to give you wrong information. Try calling the hospital. Ask for Marge Wolford in Internal Medicine. She handles all of the IM medical students and she's a really nice lady.
