Is the campus wireless?

The library is wireless. When I was on the island, they disabled wireless in the classrooms (people were surfing the net, rather than listening to lectures)

The IT department has been working on getting the entire campus to access the internet wirelessly and I believe that only two classrooms are currently unable to do so via their own access points. I am told that you can sometimes join the access point of a neighboring classroom and gain internet access that way. Keep in mind that internet access is restricted on school days to the hours of 4 PM to 8 AM.

Yes. Two classrooms at the moment are able to use the internet, but only after school hours. You can also access the internet from the cafeteria area as well.

I think they are trying to move toward to having an intranet that we will be able to acess during school hours for certain things - but this is all in the working.

Currently, all 5 classrooms have one Cisco 802.11a/g access point each. The SSID's are based on the classroom, yet they are all on the same network.

The library has two Ciscos and uses the SSID 'SUSOM'. This is on the same network as the classrooms.

There is an access point in the cafeteria as well.

Intranet access is 24/7, and Internet access is only blocked from 8am to 4pm on weekdays.

This week I hope to install the old Linksys access points in the classrooms so that each classroom will have two access points, each on it's own 100Mb feed, thus doubling the bandwidth in each room. Next semester the Linksys routers will be replaced with a second Cisco.

Soon, the classroom SSID's will be renamed to 'SUSOM' so that there are only two official SSID's campus-wide. 'SUSOM' for the students, and 'SUSOMFAC' for the faculty and staff.

I'll post another update once I get some of these things done.

Now I suppose they are planing for making the whole campus wireless
so you need not to worry

This is absolutely the case. As of this month the campus has full wireless coverage.

This seems a little odd, no? What if a student needs to find a JAMA reference, for example, during the school day? Or look at a diagram of the skull that's found online during anatomy lecture? It seems that, at this level of education, if a student wants to surf the Internet during a class, s/he should be able to do that, provided of course it is done silently and without interruption to those around him/her.

Will this policy be changing?

Well the negative outweighs the positive considering a lot of people would goof off and increase chances of disruption.

It would be nice however if they turned it back on at an earlier time... maybe like 2 or 3.

Are we talking about a medical school, or grade school?

As silly as it may sound, we had students playing games in the front row during our lectures through 5th semester. There were a few instances when one guy even put on the large, "DJ-like" headphones for sound! I pretty much felt embarrassed for the person.. Could you imagine being the prof? Before you ask, there were no problem with the prof. He was easy to understand, and his pathology material was very relevant..
