Anyone have any useful ideas on how to finance this thing without credit based loans ? Hubby can work full time as a nurse when we get back home but whilst upon the rock no ... The problem is that I'll be close to 40  when this is all done and we do not own a home or anything. If I can avoid loans then I can go straight into retirement savings home purchase etc... It may be a pipe dream but my experiences have shown me that the people on this board are amazing when it comes to advice and ideas. Any useful info appreciated. Feel free to PM
Thanx

Dear Nurse,
That is a pretty difficult thing to do, I have to ideas that may (or may not) help. :-)
1) I like Saba SOM a lot! I think it's a great school. But for your husband there will not be the opportunity to work due to the size of the island. If you went instead to AUC (which costs more...) He could most likely get a job. There are plenty of people who work without work visas there.
2) Find a home based business that he can run from the island. Internet based. Of course, Saba only has dial-up and it has a per minute charge so he will not want to spend all day on-line. Other islands have DSL and such.
I think this is particularily difficult due to the nature of the island.
Good Luck!

On the Saba SOM website they have listed a position for a job as a library operator.. $40k no taxes. That's pretty nice :-)
I'm half tempted to get a PhD and teach at the school instead of medicine for a nice little $50k tax free.
How nice can you live on Saba for 50k?

Just a couple of ideas, but you'll have to check them out with the proper folks.
#1 I know some students who are "paying as they go". They pay tuition on a monthly basis. Call Deb in Gardner about the particulars on this. She might also have some other good ideas.
#2 The Medical Center was looking for a nurse as late as early this year. I do not know if the position was filled or if it is an ongoing search. If he is an experienced RN, he shouldn't have any problem getting a work permit here. (The local schools are usually in need of certified teachers as well).
Like I said, just a couple of ideas. Check with Deb to see if she can offer any guidance.
Best of Luck!
