I just wanted to make sure that there will be rooms available when I get there. Also, does anyone have any dorm experience? For instance, is it noisy or good for studying? I want to live near the school so I could have all the facilities at my fingertips. If dorms are okay, can we choose to live there for the duration of our basic sciences? I know some schools that require you to find your own place on the island after first semester.

Well I think you can only stay there for the first semester obligatory for unaccompanied students, single rooms aren't guaranteed they are upon availability?

It is a requirement for first semester students to live in the dorms--special circumstances withheld of courses, like a family. After the first semester, all students have to leave the dorms to make room for the incoming class. Additionally,I hear that SUSOM has a housing coordinator to help those students leaving find off-campus housing.
As for my experience with dorms... it really depends on your roommate if you choose to have one. Having a roommate will save you over a thousand dollars that first semester, but it also can make it a living hell if you two do not get along. I "butted-heads" with my roommate my freshman year of college often, because he did not have any respect for my possessions nor my preferences.
Most of us should be older and mature and not run into similar problems.... Having a roommate should be an easy way to make a friend, a study partner, and maybe a drinking buddy. Unfortunately, there will be other problems about dorm life you may not be used to--shared bathrooms and close living quarters etc...
All in all, I think the benefits will outway the bad.

No you have to leave the dorm after 1st semester. And it does get noisy at times. But we're working on it. I for one am anxious to get my own place.

Aye.. I'd like my own place to, I'm not into the dorm thing. I have a buddy that will be going down the same semester as I, and we plan on sharing a dorm and then getting an apt. I wish there was a way to byass the dorm thing. Maybe I'll have to get married :)

to get out of the dorms for 1st semester you just have to tell gardner that you're engaged and your fiance is coming down to stay with you a month after school starts...since you can't have overnight guests in the dorms, they'll let you bypass the dorms and just get an apartment.

Yeah, if you don't want to stay in the dorms just say you are bringing GF, brother, mom, pet, etc. It's not a big deal. They just want you to meet people. Personally, I'd rather a habitat that doesn't disturb me at night when I'm trying to study instead of meeting people.
