Could someone give me a complete overview on campus housing? I'm going to be in 3rd year premed so any information relevant to that would be usefull. Any tips of which dorms to avoid and which to try/beg to have or is it just a case of take it or leave it?

If at all possible, try to get one of the singles. It may be possible with SD5 built and the megadorm is supposed to begin being built soon. I live in L,M,N, O and P right now and they are pretty nice and as of now are my favorite on campus. Only ones where each individual person in a suite has their own bathroom. I would stay out of SD 1 and SD 2 if I had the choice just because those are the older superdorms. I've lived in both of them and they aren't all that bad though. The newer ones have the suites though (three and four person). The new ones have doubles as well I think. In a suite of singles you have your own bedroom then share a bathroom and kitchen. In the doubles you share everything.

as a premed there might be a good chance that you're going to be living in undergrad dorms.

Is there a stigma attached to premeds? Do the meds and premeds mix freely and become friends?

Not any big "stigma" that I've noticed. The various groups (with some overlap) tend to keep to themselves (FOM with FOM, first term med with first term med; vet with vet), but I think that's due to associations, groups, and schedules rather than any sense of being better than anyone else, and there's certainly no reason *not* to. I'm second term and I mostly associate with second termers because they're who I see all the time.

What are the undergrad dorms like?

Is there no other choice other than undergrad? If SGU is going to force me to live on campus for a year it would be nice to go in what postgrad rooms are like.

I don't think that SGU will force you. I have read quite a few posts from first termers who do live off campus. Just call and let them know that you plan to live elsewhere.

i don't know if the undergrads have that choice- but frankly there are more than enough med/vets who want on campus housing...wouldn't be quite fair to them to take that housing and give it to an undergrad, when there is sufficint housing for them in the undergrad dorms.

My only worry with the undergrad dorms is the communal showers. Communal anything isn't a big thing in the UK and even the communal showers in UK undergrad uni dorms are individual showers in their own little private area.

yes homosexual gang rape is a big problem here,i myself dont go into the shower without a machete close to hand,on my first day i cut someone just to let everyone know im no ones b**tch.....

sorry couldnt resist, the showers do have curtains and u only share with ure flatmates,i wouldnt worry about it...

Oh well, I just hope I'm not a butter fingers when it comes to handling the soap.

Also the fact that the admissions counsellor said I would be the baby of the school (only 18) has put me off slightly sharing a shower with hairy old men.

well i am pretty sure I know others who are 18 at this school as premeds. but i think your biggest problem is going to be the partying that goes on in the undergrad dorms. Most of the undergrads are doing other majors besides premed and since they're mostly from other caribbean islands, they habitually smoke marijuana, and party/have a good time. So noise might be an issue since you'll have to be studying all the time, because you need a certain GPA to move onto to med school, right?
