View Full Version : Retake MCAT?

I got a 25N on the MCAT :(. I know I made some stupid mistakes in the PS section especially kind of surprised at the B.S. score. I was averaging between 28 and 33 on the practice tests. Usually stupid mistakes cost me 1-2 points per section on these also.

V.R. = 9
B.S. = 8
P.S. = 8
Writing = N

I have around a 3.0 GPA at a Canadian school in 4th year and will graduate with a BSc in Biological Sciences with minor in Chemistry after this year (May 2008).

Should I retake the MCAT in January or next summer or just use my current score?

I'm planning on applying to SGU, AUC, Saba, Ross, MUA-N, AUA, and SMU. I'm retaking Biochemistry (got a D first time around) this semester and Organic Chem II (got a D first time around same semester as Biochem)) next semester so I'm planning on applying after I finish these (around May 2008). I want to get in for Sept 2008 or Jan 2009... will it be too late for Sept 2008?

Thanks!

Thanks!Skip the retaking of Biochem. I would apply now for as soon as you finish. In the list of schools you have - am sure several will take you. A 25 is pretty good score - you may not have practiced as much as you needed for the test.

Do you think I should drop Biochemistry right now? Technically it hasn't even started... it starts on October 1st because it's an online course with starts every month. I always thought that you have to have a C or above in all undergrad classes to get accepted.

I should mention that I'm taking Advanced Biochemistry right now at the same time as I'm retaking Biochemistry.

Also, do you think I should apply now even before retaking Organic II?

I would contact the schools you are interested in. You will repeat biochemistry at just about all medical schools. If you passed organic two - don't bother unless you are attempting to apply to a US school.

This is how it works:
If your grades and MCAT are good from US and Canadian schools and you just were not in the zone - SGU, Ross, AUC and Saba are the best bets to apply to.
For those off the mark a bit or transfers - St Matt's, MUA-N & AUA

Next are Windsor, St James and St E.

Stay away from the "startup schools" unless it is started by someone who has done it before and done a good job like Dr Ross.

Is a 25N good enough for these schools? Also, I've heard that you should repeat all courses that have a grade of below C.

I "passed" both Biochem and Organic II with D grades. I heard that a D is not considered passing though to med schools. Should I contact each school I plan to apply to and ask if I should repeat these?

Thanks

ThanksPhrozen, I talk several times a month with SGU, AUC, Ross, St matt's and AUA counselors and admissions folks. I also talk with admissions people at Emory, MCG, U-Va, and a few others place. Why you many ask. Well, my two children want to go into the medical area. My son is finishing up two years with the Peace Corp and is headed back to a US post Bac program. My daughter is pushing him to UVa's prgram. My daughter is in Pre-med at Liberty U and is doing very well with a 3.7 there. About me, I am in grad school at PCOM. I was accepted at two island schools (AUA and St James). So I am a bit partial to AUA. I also like Ross and SGU.
The real trick about getting in any school is personal contact - SGU has counselors - I suggest you call them - talk to a counselor and make personal contact. Same goes for Ross and AUC. Go to one of their city tours - Meet the people make personal contact
I don't really suggest Saba because I get a lot of negative feedback from students about that school in PM's. I also like AUA and St Matt's. I do get a lot of positive feedback from student at those schools. I get good feedback from St James and Windsor students also. St E is ok as is MUA-N. Also in Belize I get good info from AGU also. The Irish schools are flat out excellent and AUG and Mexico does a good job. As do the eastern Europe schools. The key is personal contact - your expectation and hard work and research on your part.

Thanks man.

Do you think I should continue to retake Biochemistry this semester or only retake Ochem II next semester? I recieved a D grade in both these courses. Should I apply in May 2008 once the Ochem II is done or apply now?

They will layout what you need to do. I am not in admissions. What they tell you will work for the other schools. I would also plan to retake the MCAT. If you get over a 35 apply to the lessor US schools.
