Hi everyone. I had a question to ask. I want to apply to RUSM this year, but unfortuneatly got into a little trouble last year for stealing. I have a misdemeanor on my record for petty theft and want to know if anyone was accepted to Ross with a record or if I won't have a chance of getting into the school with a record.

I don't know what kind of misdamenor you got, but I do know that some Class C's can get expunged from your record. The best thing to do would be to talk to Ross, and if you can't, contact a lawyer. If the offense does get expunged you can legally deny it ever happened.

While Ross may not consider you because of this, you may have other problems. In order to get a student Visa in Dominica you must submit a letter from the police explaining your conduct. Your letter would have to state that you have a police record and there is no hiding that. With a record, you may not even be able to get in the country for school.

Furthermore, getting a medical license with a criminal record may also be a problem.

Misdemeanors are not a big deal. They will not prevent you from passing a background check. On the other hand, felonies will. So if you have a misdemeanor you don't have to worry about it. I know several people here who have gotten misdemeanors for various little stupid crimes.

If you were arrested and fingerprinted, it will show up on your background check(i.e., SLED)- but you are right-they are really not a big deal when they are coupled with time. Meaning, 7-10yr old misdemeanors may not work too much against you-just my opinion.

screw that...I agree, don't apply to Ross. ..no offense but it sounds like you shouldnt be a physician. I could misinterpret this (in which case excuse me) but otherwise...

Just be honest on the application. If it comes up, which it will, tell your story. It is up to you to explain your actions, the outcome and how it ties into your wanting to become an MD. If it doesn't pan out, there are other schools you can attend in the carib. that don't ask if you have ever been arrested. Regarding licensure, there are more md's than you would expect that are practicing with felony convictions. Many were from years ago, 15 + and white collar type crimes. Violent crimes, crimes of passion, drug related would be very difficult to overcome. A misdemeanor for theft which would be about 7-10 years old by the time you apply for permanent licensure, will come up with your prints, but you won't have a problem becoming licensed. If you want to check it out, just look at disciplinary arctions against MD's in states you want to practice. I think you will be surprised. Man, there are docs that commit serious crimes when licensed and more often than not, do not lose licensure. It's your life, it's your dream....do what you need to and make it happen. We all have opinions, but they don't matter. Do your research, be honest, and just keep moving ahead. We all make mistakes, some worse than others, but it shouldn't hold you back from becoming a physician. Good luck .

I don't think anybody here is in any position to tell anyone else whether they should be a physician or not. Least of all the premeds, 1/3 of who won't make it to even getting the oppurtunity to take Step I.
