Here goes. I know yall don't really know, but I'll post here anyway. I graduated with a 2.7 in Human nutrition (I worked 2 jobs, and did ROTC, and didn't take school as seriosly as I should have). I went on active duty as an Army officer and went to Iraq. I got some real world combat medical experience and now I want to get out and go to med school. I took physics 1 &2 at a CC and got a 4.0. I took Anatomy at BYU and got an A, and retook Organic Chem at Oregon State and received an A. Also, got an A in Bio 1 when I retook that. I volunteered in my free time at the Battalion aid station in Iraq, and am combat lifesaver qualified. I also have volunteer time both at the VA Hospital in college, as well as time at my uncle's FL clinic. I am also planning to take more college courses probably, though the rest of my pre-reqs are done. My MCAT is 27Q (8PS, 11VR, 8BS Q), I just took it after getting back from Iraq. My question, is what can I do to really help my application and do yall think I have a shot? Thanks!

ok first and foremost...welcome back from the the big sand box :) Second, it sounds like your grades are not bad at all. The 2.7 is not of help to you, but your physics, anatomy, and orgo chem are definate pluses. I'll be honest to say that i'm not sure how you taking them at different school will play a role in your admissions. I think as long as you show that you can do the work it will help. Your MCATs are not bad either. My friend got a 27 and got into a caribbean school. Other have gotten in with alot less. I actually think you can try to apply to an osteopathic school (DO) state-side with your grades, but an MD school state-side might be a bit harder. Lots of new DO schools just opened up state-side and they require MCATs around 24 and higher. as for offshore, if you are planning to take more classes and do well, it will not hurt you. IF you try your hand now at applying for caribbean schools you have nothing to lose. Apply and see what happens. no one can give you a clear cut answer. I don't think you prospects looks bad since your pre-reqs and MCAT are good. Your time overseas and volunteer time are definatly going to help. I think you have a shot. But if you want to go hardcore and help your application you can continue to take advanced courses and kick butt so you have more to add to your gpa. it might even help you to apply to a US school (But for an MD US school you'll need to boost that MCAT to a 28 or higher) . oh i almost forgot great letters of recomendation are in your best interest. they help to strengthen an application when there appears to be a weakness. Best of luck to you! take care
