that is the question we all want to know! They say it gives you discipline and it makes it easier for us, but most of us say it's a load of crap. And no open toed shoes is just as bad. We pay for these uniforms and we have to wear them monday thru thursday for no apparent reason. Can't xavier just do away with it?

Does anyone know?It is a way of telling the other people on Aruba what a maroon you are (translate - you are a loser).
The rest of the people then know to charge you two times as much for anything you care to purchase. Perhaps they also earn more money making you wear a uniform so you look like a little kruppenheimer...

It also tells the locals it's ok to sit down at your table while you're eating a sandwich in a restaurant, and ask you how to get their kid into med school.
Or to make you an easy target for Immigration officers fishing for illegals.
Or to identify you to crackhead panhandlers as a rich kid from up North who probably carries a lot of cash.
Or to aggravate cashiers who translate your grocery bill to dollars when you always pay in florins.
Or to condition a mindset of capitulation to irrational authority.
perhaps xavier's way of boosting the local economy? by letting the locals know where the walking cash machines are...

fossildoc, You have hit the correct!!!
Yes I must add, it makes us perfect targets so when we go back to the states. We will have our placed cleaned out by robbers and give them the opportunity to rob us on our next visit back home. to get them more supplies.
Look at the pictures on their website. I think St Martinius does the uniform thing also.
St.Martinus students do not have uniform. There is dress code though. DVT

Been a dean I would rather pay attention to the problem with immigration, absence of library, virus infected computers, shortage of professors, overpriced housing, etc... There is long list what can be improved...

Whether people wear uniforms or not, locals can still spot a tourist from a mile away and would probably treat you the same way even if you weren't wearing one. I personally think the uniform idea reminds me of some private boarding school for kids.

I've never gone to a school which had school uniforms and I have to say, I'm actually looking forward to it! Think about it for a moment: we are travelling from the United States, Canada and elsewhere to attend a foreign school. What's one thing you won't have much of when you get there? Money? Given. Clothing? Bingo.
Do you really want to get to an island where clothing prices are inflated for tourists, with a small sampling of clothing from home? I'm a tall guy, and I have trouble finding clothes here, let alone on a tiny island!
Imagine what you could pack in and still pass as a tourist - one suitcase and one carry on - God help you if you needed to pack a laptop or any other electronic goodies. The point is you won't be able to bring a lot of clothing with you and you won't have a lot of clothing options when you get there, and whatever you do pick up, you'll likely pay for through the nose.
Do school uniforms make a hell of a lot of sense under conditions like these? Absolutely. I don't want to spend a lot of money picking up clothing. If everyone else has to wear the t-shirt, then that saves me time and money. Hmm... what will I wear... the white Xavier t-shirt, or the blue? It's like cutting your hair short and not having to comb it in the morning!
Of course there are the old standby arguments that uniforms build a sense of solidarity, advertise and promote your school, and prevent those with less money from being chastised or embarassed. These are not bad arguments, but for me, a school uniform saves time and money.
No one says you've got to wear the uniform at home - if you want to go out, put on those clothes you brought with you and now won't have to wash every couple of days. :)

I agree it will save money, and I'm grateful for that. But I'm just concerned that the uniforms will allow us to become walking targets.

why are you buying clothes in med school? i've never bought any clothes since i've been to Antigua and i've been here awhile. all the clothes i brought from the states, i wear and i have no need to go shopping.
my gf goes shopping, but she's a girl.

ever heard of doing laundry.
Your just a walking billboard/target.
But the dean says...it shows unity and discipline, and doesnt make his school like an animal house.
But I say...I could careless...i never had to worry about what to wear...just throw on the shirt and head out to class. No problems, No worries.
ps. the school charges you way to much for the shirts...get the free one and then ask around the students where that Shirt shop is..and get some made for dirt cheap.!!!!! i am not joking.
