How does SGU compare to US vet schools? How long has SGU had an accrediated vet school, etc? Is it difficult to get residencies in the US? how does SGU's vet school compare to med school?

Here's a link to SGU's website (vet school). You should be able to find the answer to your questions. School of Veterinary Medicine - St. George’s University (http://www.sgu.edu/website/sguwebsite.nsf/svm/index.html)

SGU's vet school is pretty closely modeled after a typical US school curriculum. As far as the academics go, they are nearly identical in my opinion and from conversations with students at Penn, Cornell, Minnesota, and a few others. There are some "fringe" benefits which, unfortunately, cannot be matched down here such as exposure to research and a highly variable case load. All of the professors down here are from the US or European schools.

SGU's school is not currently accredited by the AVMA, but they are seeking accred and is probably 2-4 years away.

As far as residencies, it honestly may be a little harder in some areas but if you have a good GPA, get 1 or 2 good internships, get involved extracurricular activities for your area of interest, have some contacts and/or good letters of recommendation than you should be on equal footing with any competition from any other school.

The first year seems to be kind of close as far as classes taken but other than that I have no idea.

I don't understand this comment. Can you clarify what you mean?

Does anyone know what is keeping SGU from being accredited?

I don't know if any student has been apprised of specific results from our initial AVMA visit. There are many speculations though.

I know they are trying to increase the amount of research done here by encouraging vet students to do a dual MS/DVM program. So I think research is one aspect.

They also seem to be trying to closely document the number and types of clinical cases seen by students during both small and large animal rotations (mostly from 3rd year students I think).

If any official news comes my way I will post it here.
