Hi
Im a soon to be student at Xavier Bonaire and was wondering what everybody thought of a college student, 2 years in, going to the island and finishing up their requirements for the 90 hours in one semester and then starting their medical program. The reason for me skipping out on college is because i have the opportunity to speed up my medical career and to be frank, I also have no chance in hell of getting into an american medical program. I know the owners of this school and they are all accomplished doctors in the united states, and their curriculum is based on the NEOUCOM program. I know that the professors have all taught in the US as well. My biggest concern is not getting my **. Is that going to have any barring on residency chances or will that work to my advantage in seeing that i am ambitious.

Honestly, my choices are stick out another 2-3 years in the states to finish my ** and then apply to medical schools, or go here for 4 years and cut of 3 years of schooling and be able to start my career sooner than most.

Opinions please...

PS Im not indian or pakistani and my parents have never harbored my dream of becoming a physician they have shunned it.

What makes you say that you have no chance of getting into an American medical programme? I could have said the same about myself and British programmes 1-2 years ago, but I made it. Don't talk yourself out of completing college because you think you can't come out with a competitive GPA - at least give yourself a chance.

Short cuts in medicine normally backfire - If you feel you can't get in a US program. Then most likely you will not have the skill to past the USMLE and will have wasted a lot of time, money and effort.

Isn't there something about having to have completed 90 credits for undergrad in the US or something?

Sorry let em expand on that. Does anyone know the admission rates on premeds for MUA. Are there particular qualifications they are looking for besides the 60 credit hours and decent gpa?

Assuming you know what prereqs are required for almost all med schools and what the MCAT is, just go to their website and look at their admissions page and class profile(if they have one). I am not a med student yet but i'd say on average the caribbean med student has about a 3.0-3.4 gpa. the MCAT can vary greatly because alot of people do very very well on it so it can "even out" their lower gpa. Try using the search function on these forums.

Salutations "FutureMD46":

If that is what you really want to do, then do it. Of course, many people (including myself) would probably suggest you continue your education and try to get into a medical school in the states. No reason to sell yourself short. But then again, you know yourself better than any of us so you can make a better judgment.

My classmate did 2 years of undergrad in the states and then opted to come to Saba. He passed all his courses there as well as the USMLE Step 1 and is now in his clinical rotations. He's a pretty smart guy so one time I asked him why he didn't try the states first. He just told me he wanted to get his career going and he saw no point in getting a degree especially if he doesn't plan on using it. Well, that's his reasoning.

I'm not exactly sure where you plan on practicing but you may want to look into whether or not that state requires an undergraduate degree. Other than that, good luck on your decision and no matter what it is.
