please keep this thread open for any news on Hurricane Dean's assault on Cayman.
Currently, Dean is scheduled to hit Cayman on Sunday/Monday. Jamaica is expecting a direct hit at a category 4 level.
Little Cayman has been evacuated, and the 15 flights to Miami that were added by Cayman Airways on Fri/Sat were quickly sold out.

If anyone hears ANY news from the administration or school officials regarding Hurricane Dean, can you please post it here!
We are ALL very concerned about Dean and the potential devastation that it can leave behind. Especially all of us who went through Hurricane Ivan in Sept, 2004!
Our prayers are with those on the island.
Please keep us all posted.

For the sake of not being a complete idiot, I hope there are not any SMU students still on that island. If you can't get a visa to the US, Fly to Canada...Just get off that rock.

i'm one of the ones on the island and things haven't started yet...seems like dean has changed its direction a bit and we aren't on the direct hit anymore (still can't know what happens though)....jamaica is experiencing some rain but apparently not as bad as predicted and they haven't lost power yet....
its sunny and nice here
we were contacted bythe school but for now we're all good.
i will post more if something happens and if we have electricity and internet ofcourse.

you know, Ivan wasn't a direct hit either. Also, in the days leading up to Ivan it was nice and sunny, as well. It's called the calm before the storm. The eye of the hurricaine was actually 15 miles off the coast of 7 mile beach and what it did. You have no idea what you are potentially about to face if you don't get off the island!!! I just hope you can swim....or don't get lifted by one of the many tornadoes that touched down on the island when Ivan it.---acetre
P.S. 2cr8tive, I don't know you, but please get off the island if you still can.....

fox news....didn't they tell the people behind, the simpsons not to use their news format, as they claimed that the cartooned version of the fox news on the simpsons might be mistaken for actual fox news.
anyway i am not trying to be disrespectful. Just watched bbc news 24 . its turning more south. Cayman will still be hit but perhaps not as badly as expected. ,

From National Hurricane Center....
"DEAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 20 MPH...32 KM/HR...AND THIS
GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
ON THIS TRACK THE CENTER OF DEAN WILL PASS JUST SOUTH OF THE CAYMAN
ISLANDS LATER THIS MORNING."
its still going to do some damage, but I'm just glad that the eye isn't going to hit Grand Cayman dead on.
Hows it going over there? Power? Internet? Anyone near the airport or Crewe/Old Crewe Road Circle? I left my place night and have been waiting to hear from Miami.

In one Cayman shelter _ the gymnasium of John Gray High School _ about 100 people gathered around radios Sunday night, listening to the latest news about the hurricane.
"Whichever God you believe in, now is the time to bow your head and pray to him," said Zemrie Thompson, the shelter coordinator. Those in the gym bowed their heads.
The storm has killed at least eight people as it has moved across the Caribbean.
Dean's eye passed some 100 miles south of the Caymans, and the islands were spared hurricane-force winds, which extended outward up to 60 miles from the center.

make sure though everyone to confirm your flights. just in case.;)
does anyone live off Crewe Rd and Old Crewe Rd near the circle? I left my jeep there and would like to know if the soft top made it through? Sounds like it would have been best to stay; but better to be safe.

From SMU Admin:
Dear SMU Students,
I am very pleased to report that Hurricane Dean had a limited impact on Grand Cayman. All SMU students, faculty and staff are safe. In fact, no weather-related injuries were reported on the island. No SMU facilities were damaged, and the campus will begin returning to normal operations during the day today.
Please join me in thanking the dedicated SMU Cayman team, who did a wonderful job before, during, and after the storm. They worked long and hard to ensure the safety of all members of the SMU community, while also safeguarding our facilities and equipment.
Given our success in weathering the storm of Hurricane Dean, let's look forward to beginning the fall semester as planned on Monday September 3.
