Hey all,

I was wondering if I should retake Biochemistry? I got a D in it but as it isn't a required course... should I retake it? My only other D is in Organic Chem II, which I will be retaking next year. I am going into my 4th year in a Biological Science degree at a Canadian school and I have a total of 4 C's, 2 D's (Biochem & Organic II), and the rest are B's and A's. I am at about a 3.0 GPA and I'm writing the MCAT this month.

If I retake I have to do Biochem in the Fall semester and I have to do Organic II in the Winter semester. When should I apply to schools?? I want to get in for Sept 2008 or Jan 2009.

I wanted to some how do Organic II in the Fall semester so I can apply right away but my school is so stupid... they said I can't take Organic II at another school because it doesn't match up to my school's Organic II curriculum. So basically, I have to do it my school to have the grade replaced on my transcript. But since med schools use both grades when calculating the GPA... does it even matter? Should I take it at another school in the Fall semester even though it won't "replace" my mark on my transcript? Or should I just take it in the Winter semester at my school so it will replace the mark? But then I'll have to wait till around May 2008 to apply... would this be too late for Sept 2008/Jan 2009 start?

I'm planning on applying to SGU, AUC, Saba, Ross, MUA-Nevis, SMU, and AUA.

Thanks

Here are my marks for prereqs:

Biology:
Biology I B-
Biology II B+

Chemistry:
Chemistry I A-
Chemistry II B+

Physics:
Physics for Biosciences I A+
Physics for Biosciences II B+

Organic Chem:
Intro to Organic Chemistry C
Organic Chemistry D -> Retaking this upcoming year

English:
Taking a full year this upcoming year

Math: (only need 1 for SGU...)
Biostatistics A+

I would probably recommend retaking anything you get a D or lower in.

Wait, you're not applying to CMU?!!! It's such a great school. If their webpage is anything to go by, it's almost an exact replica of SGU!! LOL

Ok I will go for it.

What do you think about the Organic II... should I take it in Fall? So I can apply by the New Year (Jan 2008)... or should I take it in the Winter semester... but then I can't apply until I'm done that, which would be in May 2008?

If I take it in the Fall I have to take it at another university and the course won't "replace" my current mark... but since schools use both grades anyway, does it even matter?

LOL... no way! Unless they have a complete turnaround within the next few months. (Which I doubt :p)

Maybe some other lower tier schools but "just in case"... I think I'll get into one of those 7.

Does your schools Intro to Organic Chemistry count as the same as Organic Chemistry I at other universitys?

I am not sure on how the caribb schools evaluate your pre reqs but american schools do not accept intro level courses as the general (majors) level.

Yeah, it's equivalent... just a different name.

We have Intro to Organic Chem = Organic Chem I, and Organic Chem = Organic Chem II

Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on getting in to premed at MUA? The part that I am most concerned about is my gpa which was low for the most part in my undergrad. They soay the MCAT is not required for entrance....what do you guys think? Does it balance out if I take it against my gpa? Anything helps

Well that is good.

I would probably retake Biochem as well. 3.0 is pushing it pretty low, even for a caribb school.

There are numerous threads concerning premed programs at the Caribb schools. However, in short, get a bachelours degree with all the premed prereqs done in the states. Try to get into us schools first. The end.

lol do you know what you're talking about? the average to get in even at the top schools is a 3.2-3.4. how can you say a 3.0 is pushing it low?

Retake anything that you have D's in.

Yes I do. If the average for the "best" CARIBB schools is 3.2-3.4, then you WOULD be on the low end of the applicant pool. Anything above a 3.5 would more than likely be on the high end of the applicant pool.
