Treatment of severe burns requires many different skills: exquisite pain management by anaesthesiologists; reconstructive/plastic surgery; infectious disease control (pt.'s are often subject to opportunistic infection); immunologists; general trauma management (e.g. temperature control can go haywire); and some of the most skilled and dedicated nurses in the business.
For this reason burn victims are often treated in specialist burns units rather than within normal trauma departments.
