I live in LAE and there are many side roads that are pretty quiet, except for jealous barking dogs, but they are mostly on the roads. I haven't explored too much up around the lighthouse at the end of LAE, there may be some trails there, but I haven't heard of anything.
Also, I have walked parts of the dusty highway as a turnoff from that will lead into LAE near the Calabash Hotel.
Nice walks can be found in Woburn, which is the next peninsula north of LAE. There are quite a few trails there as it is protected Grenada Dove territory, even though no one seems to be sure if there are any Dove left in Grenada. You'd need a vehicle to get there, though.

there's a lighthouse! I think I may have seen that whilst out scuba diving, but didn't know you could walk to it, sounds fantastic. I was really hoping to get a car, but don't think the finances will stretch this term. wanted to go to the rainforest for walks and to the hash, etc:(
Do you know if there is a map of LAE, I live not too far from the calabash but I only just moved in and don't know my way around yet. Are there any nice beaches around for swimming and walking? Prickly Bay marina is right by me, but the beach isn't as nice as grande anse and too many boats. I saw another beach from the sgu bus but it looks a bit rough and didn't seem to have a beach or easy access?
how do you get to the dove reserve, that sounds nice, might be a walk in itself just getting there!

If you follow the main LAE road past the U-club it will take you to the lighthouse. Its not really all that impressive or large, and is currently non functional.
The next hash is August 11 and sounds like it will be in the Florida area...which I think is near Victoria in St. Marks. Probably a 2 hour drive or so.

The best maps you can get of the island can be found at the airport gift store or several other places and are quite detailed, but don't focus specifically on LAE. They are better than the tourist maps but can be confusing with the amount of detail.
The best and pretty much only beach near you is the actual beach for the Calabash and other businesses along that stretch. I have swam my dogs a fair amount there but you can't go through the hotel to get to the beach...you have to go to the public access area (real close to the entrance to prickly bay marina/boatyard). There are a few others here and there...especially in Hartmann bay over the hill toward the atlantic side.

You must get to lower woburn (i am pretty sure about the reserve being there...I know there is a lot of open space). To get there follow the road as you would to get to LAE, but instead of taking a right into LAE go straight through sugar mill (the official or unofficial area/place name) until you see a "clarks court" sign and take a right and follow that road for awhile. You will come to a marina eventually. I haven't been there in awhile so my memory is a little fuzzy. There was a hash there about a year ago.
Getting out and walking around sounds like what you're planning on doing...thats good. Even if its just in LAE with your dog(s). Remember to carry a stick or good throwing rock just in case some guard dogs get too aggressive.

I just looked at a Grenada tourist map (http://www.viaggiareliberi.it/Ospiti/Monica/Grenada_Map_Monica_Bergonzini.JPG) and it is labelled "Mt. Hartman National Park."
