Hi, here in miami, we have H&P and PE exams coming up. Can any clinical students please breakdown the exams for us, how its done, what to expect, whats tested. Whatever you remember about the exams, that might help would be appreciated.

The H and P exam, if it is unchanged from the time I was there, is garbage. They say something like 55 y/o Caucasian female comes in with chest pain.
In response you have to write something like:

Ask him about the Radiation Intensity Duration Exacerbating and alleviating factors

Ask him his past medical history: HTN/CAD, MI, etc.

Ask him family history

Ask him if he drinks, smokes, uses other drugs

Ask him what medications he is on

Differential diagnoses: MI, angina, pulmonary embolism, dissection of an aortic aneurism, GERD, costochondritis, syndrome X, cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, etc.

As for the "lab practical" component, here's the little guide I made for myself when I was in Miami. (see attachment)

Thanks a lot Sree, definately helped. As far as the H&P, is there more than one case, or multiple, and there is no multiple choice component is there? Because we are given out those practice multiple choice questions each week in class.

And the PE, do we have to do the physical exam, from start to finsish, like the checklist they give us, everything. Or do we do a focused exam only, based on a given chief complaint. I have Dr. Cassela, don't know if you know him for PE.

Thanks

If it's multiple choice now, then it might be different from the retarded one that I had. As for physical exam, we were given a particular system (like cardiovascular) and had to perform that particular exam on our partner.

Its probably not multiple choice, we are given handouts in class for each H&P class, and its just multiple choice questions we do together in class. But I will have to find out.
Thanks a lot Sree, for the scoop on the exams, cleared a few things up.

Thanks.
