i think that you need to get something straight.. so i ll put it in simple words..

there is no pre med... for english medium students.. you just will start your 1st year of med school.. and do 6 years..

those that do what is called ' POD FAK'.. are those that are planning to study in russian..
POD FAK has chemistry .. physics ..math ..russian...etc.but the MAIN purpose of it.. is for foreign students to pick up RUSSIAN so that they can go on with med school in russian.. they ll have to do a total of 7 years med school...

if you apply in english medium.. then dont bother with pod fak.. just go there as a 1st year student...and waste your 6 years there.. as M1 is not the best place to be..
you ll see what i mean when you ll be there..
good luck

then your agent is trying to make more money from you.. and the agent at M1 being mr saman.. i would not be surprised..
so go and waste an extra year.. do your med program in 7 when you could do it in 6..
good luck

did saman tell you or the secretary Lydia or olga?

I don't go to a Russian school, and don't plan to, but I've researched every medical school from here to Timbuktu.

bpoichan is right. You are getting scammed. I've never read of any school in Russia that requires a premed year UNLESS:

1) you want to study in Russian
or
2) you want to study in English AND you cannot already speak English well

Obviously, neither of these apply to you (you speak English well, it seems), so your agent is trying to rip you off. Politely tell him what I've just told you, and hopefully he'll realize you are wise to his plot to rip you off and will back off.

Don't be so gullible around these agents; they are out to make a buck!

bpoichan is saying there are two programs: one in English, one in Russian. So yes, the English one does exist. However, it does NOT require a foundation year, like your agent pretends it does.

Yes, any state university is very cheap. The State Univ. of NY is extremely affordable (this is where I go, and the cost is around USD$5,000) and ranked as one of the top universities in America for certain sciences (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry in particular). A couple of SUNY schools also have medical schools, so there are plenty of oppurtunities to get volunteer experience.

Look into SUNY-Stony Brook (Stony Brook University (http://www.sunysb.edu)) which is where I attend. Like I said, dirt cheap, respected in scientific community, and has a huge population of Asian students, so you'd feel less out-of-place. I think around 25% of our students are from China, and a large amount from Korea and Japan. Not sure about Malaysia, but I know we have a Thai Student Club, so there are probably some students from every Asian country (including Malaysia) around here too!

Good luck.

masamune..
first of all there are some info that you need to understand about med schools in the USA...
if you are planning to go to some university in the USA and then take the MCAT exam and hopefully go to an american med school.. you need to know that if you are a foreign student.. and i mean by that you are studying with a student visa and are not a permanent resident (green card) or US citizen.. your chances to enter a medical school are about 1%.

therefore if you are not a resident nor a US citizen .. it would be better for you to go to med school abroad.. for 6 years.. that will save you all the useless undergraduate studies that one has to go through in the states.. and then take your USMLE and apply for a Post graduate residency in the USA.

simply avoid M1.. PFU is excellent in education.. student life..and great great faculty..

Indeed, contrary to preparatory course (which does not influence eligibility for university study in Russia) some years ago MMA organized also Premed training. It is mainly for Malaysian students having SPM or O-level certificates. Those who finish it are eligible to apply for MD study in MMA. I have no details about the course structure but I may ask for. I heard they offer study of Russian and of core subjects (Bio, Chem, Math or Physics). I am not sure now about the language of instructions they use to teach natural subjects.
Let me know if you need more details, I will call the person who supervises the training.

that extra preparatory year... for the malaysian student with governemtal scholarships is paid for by the malaysian government..
and of course one extra year doing literally or almost nothing on some fake excuse that it is a ' preparatory year' will bring MMA and RSMU and extra $10,000 per year per student..
I am not surprised with what SAMAN and ALAYUTDIN are doing (the agent and the dean of med fac for foreign students)..cuz that brings them extra money...

those that are not from the malaysian scholarship program are GENERALLY accepted without any problems in the 1st year of med school...... SAMAN AND ALAYUTDIN have that thing of going over their quota of admission.. taking TOO MANY students to MMA/RSMU... get them to pay their yearly tuition and have them kicked out by spring.. at least 30 to 40 students are kicked out every year.. you know why? extra money to their pockets that wont be refunded..

just beware guys.. beware...
and dont buy the poop that some agents online tell you here..
i am telling what s happening there every year..

if you are a malaysian on governemnt scholarship..then you are set.. i can guarantee you ll end up with a diploma with honors.. without having tocrack a single book open!
good luck

Too bad i am not on a government scholarship. I have to take the preperatory course because with my high school qualifications i'm not eligible to apply 1st year in MMA. You think i wanna go pre med...use your brain man..

Mikhail..if u can please give me more details on the pre-med course. I noe that most of the time i'll be studying russian..But the core subjects such as bio, chem, physics, maths are they instructed and learn in english..The books and everything? And oh yeah..i have friends that passes the pre med and is currently in MMA doing medicine. masamune...i think that it is time for you to use your head ...
or maybe the english language is not your best friend...
i ll try to tell you in nice simple words...

if MMA is telling to go through a preparatory year...then RUN AWAY from there...
there are NO prep year for english medium students!!

MMA has come up with this idea to rip one year out of your life and to get extra money from you.. that s all...

it seems that you want to waste an extra year in russia...let alone money....if that is so.. please go for it!!

other med schools dont do that!! if you apply to ANY med school in russia in english medium.. you would NOT have to waste that extra year and money with some low quality useless prep year... REMEMBER these words when you ll be doing yours at MMA!

Regardless, if my country said i need a pre-university degree to get in to med school then i'll get through it. Besides, with my high school degree it's never enuf to get in a med university no matter where u go in the world. And ur wrong..i've asked a number in fact all the 5 university recognised by malaysia and they said the same thing. I even asked St petersburg cause i have a friend that goes there. ALL saying i need a pre-university level to get in..such as a-levels,sam..etc

your country was fooled by MMA and RSMU..that s for sure..
i was there when the delegation came...
anyway..
if it is something you have to go through.. then go for it..

and waste a year....

anyway it aint my problem! (that s a sentence you ll be hearing a lot in russia)

I'm a malaysian student and I had done both pre-med and 1st year at MMA. The school has pre-med in english but u will only start the science subjects in January or february.
If you are malaysian with SPM , U MUST do pre-med so that u can get the NOC and will be recognized by the MMC later.

hi there.. i had a little question..
how many hours of russian do you have during that prep year? and how well do the students in the english medium doing that prep year speak russian?

do you still have to go all the way across moscow for your prep classes?

i was just wondering if Saman kept his promises

I didn't study pre-med in english actually but my friends did!! For those who are studying in english, they need to travel a lot to different departments as 1st year students do.pre-med course starts on 1st of october and you will study russian language only until Jan or Feb. I think you will stay in the hostel which belongs to Pushkin Institute of russian language and u will learn russian there. So, you dont need to travel for the 1st semester. For second semester, u will need to travel only once or twice a week to 'Ismailovskaya' where u will learn all basic science. This is what happened to the last year students. If you have any question or need my help, you can send me private message

thanks.... it is the same way as it always was ... meaning that the students DO NOT pick up the language...
which will be a handicap later on..

and one more question.. those english medium students.. do they deal with Russian students? do they mix up with them? do they even talk to one another?

i remember in my days at MMA... english medium students were like in the 3rd dimension..and practically never mixed up nor talked with russian students..

Ok...just found out my friend's brother gone through pre-med. He is now in the 5th year. He said the core subjects are in English and its a must to take before admitting to 1st year if u dun hv a pre-uni qualification. He said pre-med helps him master the language because 1st semester learning russian full time where else 1st year only couple of classes per month.

learning russian in PUSHKIN institute??? yeah right...that institute is not an institute but a playing ground.. those who lived there would know what i mean.

the english medium students all have horrible russian....and that s something that newcoming students have to really work hard at from the start...

but that mandatory prep course is new to me..

Mikhail..if u can please give me more details on the pre-med course. ><

Masamune, sorry I did not reply in time. I see you’ve got some explanations from your country-mates, the former students of pre-med courses. I spoke to MMA officials. The answer is the 1-st semester is devoted to study of the language whereas at semester 2 the students get classes of natural sciences in English. The textbooks provided are also in English.

I dont think you can use ur pre med result for entering another university in another country..but if u are holding MMA's premedical diplom..you can enter to any other medical university in russia.

Its funny when you think of it but i guess 5,000$ in USA and 1,500 in Russia with all expenses to it are equal what do you think:confused:
