Hi,

I am about to start my 4th year of medical school (Carib school) and need some help with the timeline. First of all, an H1 visa is not an option for me since I won't finish my clinicals until May 31st and that doesn't leave me enough time.

In terms of the J1 visa. What do I need to do and what tests do I need to write? I have writtien USMLE step 1 and will have written USMLE step 2 by August. Which Canadian exams do I have ro write and what do I need to in order to attain a J1?

Could someone please give me a brief guideline or direct me to a resource?

Thanks for your help!

In order to obtain the Statement of Need from Canada - needed for your J-1 Visa application - you must pass the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination. This exam is scheduled in the fall 2007 and early in 2008. Go the MCC website to register for the exam. Medical Council of Canada / Le Conseil médical du Canada (http://www.mcc.ca)

If you have questions about how to get a Statement of Need, send an email inquiry to "j1visa@hc-sc.gc.ca". This email address is the general inquiries address at Health Canada which issues the Statement of Need for Canadian Citizens and Canadian Permanent Residents.

To apply for the J-1 Visa, see the ECFMG website, Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program. ECFMG® | Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (http://www.ecfmg.org)
