I just had a question I hope you guys can answer regarding the University of Manitoba School of Medicine. I am a biology major in the United States and was very interested in their school but they only consider canadian citizens and landed immigrants. My main question is how can I achieve landed immigrant status and what are the likely hood of admission their I just finished my freshman year with a 3.475 overall and a 3.571 science.
Thanks for any input you can give

ic the gpa is high but they drop classes out on their gpa calculation and is set at a 4.5 gpa i also so that gpa was ranked only 10% in their total ranking

On number 13 you said to read, well first for this past 2006 admission cycle 523 out of province applied and 65 interviewed and from those interviewed 48 were offered admission so in terms of this past year chances of admission are great if granted an interview. Here is the link showing those statshttp://umanitoba.ca/faculties/medicine/media/admissionsreport_06.pdf
Also in terms of gpa like it says in number 13 you said to read you need a 3.95 but that is the adjusted gpa out of 4.5 not 4.0 after they drop some of your lower grades in courses. I read also that gpa is only 10% of the weight in overal factors here is the link that shows it and how they drop courses (10% AGPA, 50% MCAT, 40% Personal Essay, Letter of Recs, Interview) http://www.umanitoba.ca/student/admissions/media/medicine_bulletin.pdf

hahahah you think canadian med schools are easier to get into than their US counterparts? Sure, go ahead and apply with a 3.5 gpa, i'm sure they'll accept you.

Look Jayson, Canadian medical schools are impossible to get into for Canadian students. That's why all of us, some with very respectable GPAs and very good MCATS are studying elsewhere. If you moved to Canada, waited three years (or whatever it is) and got your landed status, did a Master's degree with an 4.0, volunteered on the streets of Calcutta, and competed in the next Olympics, you'd still have too low an undergrad GPA and would have difficulty getting in.
And no, I'm not being facetious. It is that hard to get into Canadian schools. I was waitlisted at Manitoba, with a gpa very similar to yours, and a very good MCAT. Needless to say, I didn't get in.
Forget it, it is simply not possible. Focus your energy and efforts on those schools that you actually have a chance at getting into.

Exactly. Also, to wait at least 3 years if not more just to become permanent resident IMO is a complete waste of time.

admission into canadian med schools is a JOKE. it's not so much what grades you have, but more of WHO you know. it's sad, but it is the reality, i've seen it with my own eyes. sucks to have to post this so close to canada day and all, but it's gotta be said.

Honey,
That doesn't make any difference. If you moved to Manitoba now to finish your degree, because you'd be on a student visa, you would still need to wait several years after you'd finished your degree before you could apply for landed status. We don't know the exact procedures, because they change a lot, but check out the immigration Canada website. Also keep in mind that while you waited, up would probably not be able to work.
Then, and only then, would you be able to apply. And as I, and others have posted, you would need to have a very good GPA by then. A competitive GPA for Canadian med schools is somewhere around 3.7-4.0. Forget what the website says, that's the minimum requirement to apply. To be accepted with a lower gpa, you have to know someone and have people pull strings on your behalf.
You havn't said why you're so interested in Manitoba. Trust us, as a non-Canadian, getting into a Canadian medical school will take more time and effort than you can possibly imagine. Keep your grades up, write a really great MCAT, and go to a US school. You could apply for a Canadian residency (also nearly impossible to get), but if you really want to practice in Canada, do a US residency, write the Canadian boards, and transfer your credentials when you're done. I hate pissing on someone's dream, but trust us, you're wasting your time even thinking about this.
If you don't want to go to a US school, look into Ireland and Australia. Medical schools in both countries are happy to accept non residents.
Good luck!

. YOU HAVE ZERO chance of getting into any canadian medical school even if you had a 4.0 and 40 MCAT.
Plus you stated you had a 3.5...thats good enough to get into a lot of small US state schools. Especially if you have a decent mcat score. If not, come and join me in the carribean.
