Trust me! 5 from a Carrib school doing residency in Canada is a LOT !! it is estimated about 4000 IMGs are in the province of Ontario alone, driving taxis and delivering pizzas. Canada is very unfriendly to IMGs since it is a universal health care system.
peace.

Wow! That's a lot of delivery guys working out of their fields. That's customer relationship 101. Good for their future patients too.

Most Canadians grad's can't afford to work in their own country (loans, universal health, etc) so they choose to come to the US for training, to get employed there. That leaves open stops. Canada also has a high demand for doctors but not enough graduates to meet that demand. The top IMG's fill that demand. Also I don't think Canadian programs have the same backwards attitude against IMG's like US program directors, they take the best no matter where you are from.

I think he is excited that there is a chance to practice in Canada from a Caribbean med school. I heard lots of talk that this could not happen. But it can happen, therefore, there is hope. Hes excited about the hope.

Thank you for all your posts and answers, I posted here to search some answer to some question that I deem "highly interesting". Saba students certainly stand out of the crowd in helping our Canadian students, which myself included. Also, I think that it is perhaps acceptable for me to be excited for the hope to get back to Canada, since I was born here (even though it may seem unacceptable by others).
thank you very much for your answers, may the best happen to you in ur future endeavors and god bless SABA students :)

men, I love Canada...no I was not born there, but I traveled to many provinces, states including Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec. I love the maple syrup, hockey, CN Tower, Niagara Falls, and Ice wine. I know many cnds that have not heard about ice wine yet:confused:
I am aware that Quebec did not allow foreign graduates sit on their board exam couple months ago. Thats why I said "he's gotta be joking" I have not heard other provinces' decision. Please tell us more...It is great that you're excited about it..

Hi...
"travelled to many provinces, states including......." darn, I wasn't aware that Manitoba, Ontario or Quebec were STATES in Canada!!! Yeah, the Maple Syrup, Tim Horton's Coffee are pretty good and you can't beat a really good game of hockey on the pond in the middle of July!!!
OK... being a little facetious here... my aplogies...;);)
Actually, as far as residencies to IMG's, Nova Scotia (Dalhousie University) has just recently opened 10 new dedicated spots to IMG's.
IMG's are now also permitted to enter the 1st round iteration for residency positions... Baby steps.... yes.... but definetly moving in the right direction... Be patient, it will come.. A recent Saba grad just picked up an "Ortho" residency at Mac. "Not Too Shabby"....
Hey guys/girls, give yourself some credit... Saba grads are extremely credible individuals...that's why you are ranked within the top 4 Caribbean Med Schools.....
Kill the Steps, get to know the "right people" and the "sky is the limit"
Hang in there, be positive and bust your butt for 20 months....
All the best....

Looks like Saba is a viable option for Canadians. Does Saba have a list of Graduates who have matched in Canadian Residencies like this one that I found for SGU?
Google Docs & Spreadsheets - Canadian Residency Match List from SGU (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=psyLPQZjrlK9pereijtnREA)

ive have looked into SGU, Ross and other Caribbean school and I found SABA to have the most Canadian residencies out of all.
having a look at that spreadsheet that you posted, just for 2007 SABA has more graduates in CDN residencies then SGU combined in the last decade.
take a look at these match results from 2007: (one student got SURGERY at University of Toronto- have not seen that in any other Caribbean school)
SABA University - www.saba.edu - international medical university college (http://saba.edu/residency_match.php)
PS: i don't mean to bash any other Caribbean school and I do recognize SGU and Ross to be one of the best medical school in the Caribbean but in terms of residency matches, SABA is up there.

My apologies for writing "provinces, states" Since I was not sure if they were provinces or states, I wrote both and hoped that somebody corrects me, and you did. Thanks/Merci. I'm not an American, so I am not making fun of Cnd or her people. By the way, please tell us what the difference is, seriously and enlighten us... I know though, it could be discouraging to hear how other people talk incorrectly about our countries..I hear it all the time about mine....
Great data coming in about residencies...thanks all.

Well, I'd be happy to let Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and maybe British Columbia into the States. Ontario would take a lot of convincing, and Quebec? Forget it. :D

is it difficult for CDNs at Saba to get residency matches in the US and then apply for visas?

Re message about which provinces may go to the States. I suspect BC would put up more of a fight than Quebec (but we would be polite about it). I'm not able to take an unofficial poll though -as I now live in New Jersey.
The rumor going around when I was graduating is that the Steps 2 and 3 will count as equivalent to their Canadian counterparts, as long as they were taken after 2002. That's a rumor I didn't verify so anyone interested should check it out.

Are you for real? Quebec and Ontario are easy to come back to after doing residency in the US. If you are a Quebec resident.. you just walk back and your there! Sign and you can practice.
Ontario, as long as you do the equivalent residency in the US and get registered with the college there.. you should have no problem working in Ontario.
BC is like California.. too stuck up.. and even though I grew up in BC, I will have to say no thank you. Too expensive to live there and too much traffic. Transit skytrain.. is underdeveloped.

i think he went a bit off topic and was discussing which provinces HE would allow to become part of the states- not actually topical info like which provinces are easier to practice in!

NO WAY. NONE OF THE PROVINCES CAN LEAVE. Quebec people who wish to be independent they can move to New Orleans. BUT MY COUNTRY STAYS THE SAME. Also all people who are not happy with Canada, can also leave. I will help you pack.

Chill out babe!
We love cnd. We are just trying to give some more states to the United States, that's all...
Allright, Quebec people can move to New Orleans, so they can start an independent Quebec State in Lousiana. Sounds good to me, why the hec I would care, I am not from New Orleans...
Quebec people start speaking french there, they have already the french quarter there in New Orleans; the problem is solved...
Next: BC..., Sorry Mr. Harper (the PM, fyi), or more apologiees to the Queen...:twisted:
If BC people want, they can have Manhattan!!!!

Look, the Quebec is the country of Quebecers, not yours. It has always been that, and it won't change, whatever you say. So if a day we decide to be fully independant of the british colonizers that you are, we will. That's it.
AND, the mention you did about New Orleans is very odious and racist...knowing that the french people of New Orleans are refugees and survivors of the massacre and deportation made by british canadians. Here is the story: The Acadian Deportation Period 1755 - 1762 (http://www.girouard.org/cgi-bin/page.pl?file=deportation&n=4)
Now, by your words, you support this terrible human tragedy. What a great humanist physician you are or will be.
