View Full Version : DNA pol I vs. DNA pol III
Ok could someone please explain to me the difference between DNA pol I and DNA pol III. They both have exonuclease activity but I can't seem to understand what each is used for and the directions.
Thanks!

Hmm...Dr. X - what FA edition are you refering to? I amusing 2005 ed and 2006 ed!

DNA Polymerase III - makes the chain in a 5 to 3 direction and it proofreads with a 3 to 5 exonuclease, so it goes both ways doing something different
DNA Polymerase I - breaks down the RNA primer with a 5 to 3 exonuclease
I got that straight out of the FA, if the pages don't match up just look up DNA polymerase in the index
See that is exactly what I thought as well...but there is a questions I got in UW and in there the explaination was different which totally confused me. I think in the UW explaination they went more in depth than just the one small section in FA.
Either way, it's better to just keep it simple! I didn't like UW's explaination.
Thanks!
