14 yo white F grunts and clears her throat several times in an hour. During conversation, she often randomly shouts :mad:. She does idiosyncratic, complex motor activities such as turning her head to the right while she shuts her eyes and opens her mouth. She can prevent these movements for a brief period of time, with effort :oops:. What’s the most affective TX for her disorder?

a. individual psychodynamic psychotherapy
b. Lorazepam
c. Methylphenidate
d. haloperidol
e. imipramine
f. carbamazepine

follow up Q: what other class of drugs could you use to treat this PT?

haloperidol has been used for tourette's syndrome... You can also use clonidine.

right again evans.... vocal tics (grunting, throat clearing, shouting) are characteristic of Touretttes. TX include neuroleptics and alpha 2 agonists (clonidine, guanfacine)
