DECISION TIME: Accepted for MUA and AUA
Hi All,

I need advice on making the decision between these two schools. I am a 24 year old Canadian student that holds an Hons. BA from UofT. I have been accepted into the pre-med program at MUA and 3d semester of pre-med at AUA. From my research, both schools have the same credentials, however AUA appears to have better facilities. The MUA website is a bit outdated and clearly AUA has invested more in their public relations. However, both schools are new (MUA 1998 and AUA 2001), so I'm having difficultly in evaluating them.

Which school has better clinicals and affiliated hospitals?
Which school provides better preperation for the USMLE?

I've listed my own research of costs for both school. I know there may be hidden costs that I have not factored, please indicate if this is the case and what I should expect.

This is a really difficult decision for me. Any advice/insight is greatly appreciated :mrgreen:

Both are good schools with NY approval. MUA-N uses the same group for clinicals as Saba which is pretty good.


Have you thought about a US post Bac program since you have an honors degree? That would be way more cost effective by getting into a Canadian or US medical school. It would also save you a boat load of licensing issues. Also think about the program at SGU. They are a fifty state school and SGU and Saba have a small bit of luck getting a few Canadian residencies. Don't rush off in to the islands. Island schools are not accredited if you want to transfer.

The appeal of these programs is that they will prepare and familiarize me with the school's style of teaching.

My other option is to take credits here and apply for meds there in a year.
i believe, an MUA student can correct me if i'm wrong, but it may be possible to do pre-med at MUA and then go into SABA's med program. this is not the case for AUA, those pre-med classes taken there will only be good for their program and will not transfer to a better island school such as Ross.

My other option is to take credits here and apply for meds there in a year.MUA-N to Saba - Yes, AUA to Ross - will not happen. Reason MUA-N is associated with Saba in management. AUA was started by Ross teachers who left Ross after Devry purchased Ross. bad ju-ju there.

Your options - MUA-N to Saba or Stay at MUA-N
or AUA pre-med to AUA. All are good choices. Both DOCP and myself will suggest AUA for several reasons. Better island. Growing school with former Ross management. Both Nevis and Saba are small islands. I think your best bet is to go visit Nevis and Antigua. Reason you are going to be spending lots of time 5 to 6 semesters on the island more than a medical student - you really want to be darn sure you fit the island and the style of teaching.
Also I will be blunt AUA is a harder school. They do have a fail out rate there. That has happened with several of friends who went there. However, the students who made it thru AUA with good grades have done well on their Step 1 exams well above average. Also AUA clinicals are growing well.

why dont you take the premed courses in the states and then apply to auc, sgu, ross, saba, mua-n, aua, and smu? it seems like you would have a much easier choice to make if you did it that way, plus your premed work would count for any school.

if you really want to go to caribbean for premed, go to mua-n. mua is cheaper, more reputable with solid medical program, affiliation with SABA and u get to study with lota canadian students. u can always go back to U of T to finish pre-med requirements or go to seneca college, humber college or centenial college to get your pre-med requirement.
