I am interested in attending Xavier, at first glance it seemed like a good school, and I am particularly interested in the combined Pre-med/MD programs it offers. However there has been quite a lot of different problems that seem to keep arising which make its credibility seem questionable. I guess I have a couple different questions to ask, hopefully someone will know the answer.

-First, what other schools, if any, offer a combination of pre-med/MD.
-I completed my freshman year undergrad in the US, will these credits transfer?
-Why is it better to take 4 years worth of undergrad courses in the US if you can finish the same courses in about one year at Xavier?
-Is it possible to take Pre-Med courses at Xavier, and then use those credits to transfer to a different Medical School (US or Caribbean, either one)?
-The other Caribbean schools mentioned (Ross, SABA, SGU, AUC, etc), do those have a combined pre-med/MD program where you dont have to take the MCAT?
-How well does Xavier's Pre-med program compare to that of taking the same courses over 4 years at an undergraduate college? Advantages/Disadvantages?

I know this may be asking a lot, but I am just really confused/overwhelmed with all these different schools and programs, licensing, whether or not I will be accepted in the US, Credit transferring, etc.

If anyone could add some insight to help me out, that would be amazing, Thanks. :)

What do you mean by "quite a lot of problems"? I think you should explain your statement

complete all your pre reqs in the US that way they will be accepted at any school you apply to. i am not a big fan of these pre med/md programs off shore because the credits are worthless outside that school and you are basically locked in. what if you don't like the school, island, etc?

bust your butt and try to get into a US school...any island school should be a last resort not your main goal because you will be looked down upon and will not have the same oportunitioes coming from a carib school.

there are also much better options in terms of lenght of operation, 50 state licenseability, schools with thousands of grads. so far xavier is unproven and opening up campuses like they are going out of style..they don't seem foucused on providing a solid education at one site but rather franchising out so ask current students and admin about grads, usmle rates, etc.

SGU and Ross which are much better schools offer pre med/md. i beleive MUA-nevis also does and all 3 have longer track record but again finish in the US then you can apply to any of the long standing carib schools if you don't get in the US

If anyone could add some insight to help me out, that would be amazing, Thanks. What AUCMD2006 say is correct. Island school pre-req's mean zip, zero the null set.... You will have wasted your money unless you do it in a US school. Next - think about the quality of the school you go to! Let me specifically answer your questions!

First, what other schools, if any, offer a combination of pre-med/MD. - AUA, SGU, Ross, MUA-N, St James, Xavier, All Saints have these programs. You do need at least 90 hours. However, just my .02s don't take shortcuts - they will backfire on you 99% of the time in medicine.
I completed my freshman year undergrad in the US, will these credits transfer?Yes - but you needed 90 hours undergrad at least for MD license. Get a degree from a US school. It will be better in the long term. But the island school stuff will not transfer back to the US because it is not accredited!
Is it possible to take Pre-Med courses at Xavier, and then use those credits to transfer to a different Medical School (US or Caribbean, either one)?NO!

Why is it better to take 4 years worth of undergrad courses in the US if you can finish the same courses in about one year at Xavier? You learn more stuff that will help you pass the USMLE exams. #1 that comes to mind - critical thinking!

How well does Xavier's Pre-med program compare to that of taking the same courses over 4 years at an undergraduate college? Advantages/Disadvantages?Advantages - Xavier or any other island school has you over a barrel financially. Disadvantages - The credits mean zero! You will save a boat load of trouble and headaches getting into a US medical school.

MD program where you don't have to take the MCATBad idea - any place that does not take the MCAT limits you. The four years in a US school and taking all those English course helps you do well on the MCAT and on the USMLE exam where you have to figure out fine shades of meaning.

Hope this helps your confusion.

I agree, finish your undergrad in the US. You can finish it in 3 years if you really want to speed up. It will pay off come medical school coursework, step 1, etc. It teaches you a lot more than bio/chem/phy..it teaches you how to be a professional , a human being and gives you a broad education. (socio/psych/geo, etc)

After your undergrad, give MCAT a shot..and depending on your score/GPA from undergrad apply to appropriate schools.

I do not like the combined md/premed programs for the same reasons stated above.

Carib med schools should be a last resort. If you slacked off during undergrad and you are much more responsible now, then you go to a carib med school.

Also, if you are in a hurry. With US schools it can take two years to take the MCAT, apply, and THEN get accepted. For xavier you apply, and get accepted for the next semester.

1. SGU, ROSS, Sint Eustatius, SABA, hmm... MUA-N.... anything else?

2. No, I do not believe so...

3.Don't you want a BA/** degree? Its good to have something before moving on just incase if you can't finish your MD.

4.US - I don't think so... 100% no
Caribbean - I don't think so too... 99% no

5.MUA-N [need very high GPA if no MCAT and other activities
Sint Eustatius [need okay GPA, school is willing to give you a chance for your dream if you can show it during phone interview]
AUA [not sure if they have premed program.

6.If you do well in Xavier premed... i think you are automatly in for med program there...

if you take courses over again at your undergraduate [assuming you did bad first time]... i think MUA doesn't like it and infact, I was rejected because of that... Sint Eutatius noticed that I tried to improve myself and gave me a chance... AUA .... not sure yet, just sent in my application form...
