When you finish the basic science portion of the program, you then begin your clinical rotations. Where do you do these at? Can you do them at any teaching hospital? Can you do them at a local hospital with a "mentor" type of physician in each type of specialty? What is the flexibility as far as time and ability to continue with your current practice while you do clinical rotations? I have a busy chiro office and cannot take too much time away even though I have an associate who will take up the slack while I'm gone. Any help would be great... Thanks:)

Lifeman,

Please check out the new Windsor Clinical Forum. I think it may help you in answering some of your questions.

What is the name of the hospital in Nashville? I also saw that you can set up your own rotations if you do the legwork... ? How does that work? Thanks.

Lifeman:

Once you're done with basic sciences you have to board!! At this point and after...I doubt u will be able to continue to be an integral part of your practice .....if you seriously wish to pursue a career pathway in medicine.
Between clinicals, boards, & residency....i dont see you having alot of time to actively be involved in your practice. So...either plan on phasing out more...or perhaps selling. There are NO SHORT CUTS in this pathway....and it isn't something you can do halfway. I hope this helps!

I knew that you would have to quit practicing when you were doing your "Residency". That would be the time I would sell my practice. I didn't think that I would have to quit while doing clinicals. Am I wrong in that assumption? Obviously, clinical rotations would require you to be there many hours of the week. But how many? Can't you do rotations during the evenings and weekends?

no you can't set up the times you go in to the hospital...its not like you need to complete 40 hours a week in the rotation and then you choose the time and place at your convenience.

some rotations require alot of time, surgery, ob, icu were 100+hrs a week, IM was 40-60, fp was 30-50, rads and peds were a lot less. the amount of time you spend is highly variable by rotaion, team you are assigned, and even attending preference and their schedule because you are usually synchronized to their schedules and stay on call with your team so it can vary from mopnth to month on the same rotation.

can you run a full time job during clinicals? i don't see how unless you are absent alot and are good about lying and hiding where you are. the other way i see it is if you have attendings/residents that don't care about teaching or where you are which happens but in the end hurts you...

what most allied health profs do is work part time around clinicals. there was a nurse in my class that did 1 or 2 shifts per week at the hospital she was rotating at and i know a chiro that had clinic hours on saturdays only.

basically if you are in a 'real' teaching rotation there is no way you can do a full time job outside your hours in hospital because on top of the time you spend just at the hospital there are presentations to do, reading up for rounds and pimping the next moring, preparing for cases by reviewing anatomy etc....just too much learning to work....

There comes a point where you need to make the commitment. Lets face it, if you have done the Basic Medical Sciences and passed USMLE Step 1, what are you waiting for? Get the clinicals done so you can take USMLE Step 2 CK and CSA. Also get the clinicals done ASAP so you can get to residency. The Windsor HCP program gives you the opportunity to continue to make money and get the Basic Medical Sciences done without too much of a hurt on your income for this period of time. However there is a put up or shut up time and when you reach clinicals you need to make a choice! As the expression goes, "There is no free lunch!"
Good luck, A_G

i am a PA-C and enrolled in the HCP program. My suggestion would be to market your practice before enrolling and have a clause for your sabbaticals. that way you can be more selective in you marketing and whom you will intrust for the continued care of the patients you have worked so hard to treat.
you can also get out from under the management aspect of your practice and when you do go home just be concerned with your family and treating patients...i would work towards a 40% gross charges for easier book keeping on your part...just a suggestion
