I am a 3rd semester student as well as Student Government President at American Global University. I would like to take this opportunity to dispel some of the rumors I have just read on this message board. We currently have 30 students in Belize and 10 professors, all of which have been educated in the US. The cost of living is very reasonable. I pay $1600 a semester to live in the dorms, but there are many students who have found very inexpensive housing off campus. We are provided with breakfast and lunch each day at school for $3 a meal; a typical meal out in Belmopan is $5. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions a prospective student may have. Feel free to email me at cware@agusm.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

Considering that EVERY other caribbean medical school does not have all their faculty with US pedigrees, please explain how AGU has been so fortunate.

You said you were a potential student accepted by 2 universities . How can you know about faculties in all caribbean universities.

I just did a random check of the following schools

SMU
SJSM
CMU
XAVIER
MUA
AUA

Not one of them has faculty with purely US educations.

Roundtree is obviously right.

Why will you not post faculty names?

Well, the figure of 30 students and 10 profs does not make sense to me considering there are 5 semesters of basic science at Belize.

How many students in each semester?
There are 3 subjects in each semester?
Is there a semester with no students?
10 profs, 10 different basic science topics?
Is there a semester with 1 or 2 students and 3 different profs?

I am more curious as to why they will not post the names of the faculty. All the other schools do.

That is true. AGU could at least post them on their on site or answer e-mails.

Please, e-mail other students at other schools or mods of valuemd to get a more complete view about this school.

How would students from other schools or Moderators know anything about AGU? Your "information" has been proven to be untrue so I'm not sure how anyone else would be able to make a judgement on the school without either visitng or waiting until the first class sits for Step 1. It has been open for LESS than a year...you cannot either praise or slam the school fairly at this point.

What has been proven to be untrue? Please: Elaborate!

1) The school will not post faculty names on its website
2) Views of belize city and the ocean on the website even though belomopan is inland.
3) 10 full time profs in belieze and 30 students. Why have I been pm'd from others (6 others) that this is simply not true.

atlanticvioxx

I did not even tell him/her anything anti AGU, I just said pm students at other caribbean med schools. Also, for a less biased viewpoint, pm students who are not at Belize med schools.

In response:

1. It's obvious that AGU does not have a great website...they are working on getting the faculty posted. This takes time.

2. Yes there are pictures of the beach. Many schools have pictures on their websites that are not on their campus or immediate area. The ocean is about 50 miles away...I have been to the coast many times since I arrived in August. The website clearly states the school is in Belmopan. They are simply showing the many beautiful areas of Belize.

3. Your sources are inaccurate. Many of them are referring to AGU during the first semester. At that time you are correct, there were only 10 of us and 2 professors. There was no need for more. Again, I find it interesting only one of your "sources" has contacted me. If they were ever affiliated with AGU I would know them.

I am just telling him/her to look at many schools, not just say I want to go to this school or that school. The 1st line a applications should be to the Big 4, no questions asked. After that, look at a fair amount of schools, not just one or two and perspective students should ask themselves:

1) USMLE Pass rates for the schools.
2) Clinicals

That's the first post you have written in this forum that made sense. If you really want to be a "good samaritan" maybe you should take this approach instead of going around slamming schools you know nothing about.

The 3 P's . . . PRIOR PROPER PLANNING . . . If doctors can manage to run a quality medical school program . . . why would you imagine it would be difficult to recruit 10 Professors with US Medical Degrees?

Having taught for St. Luke's in 2003 and Grace in 2004, I can tell you with some authority that most of your questions have to do with the politics of Belize, a most corrupt little country. There is tremendous pressure on the schools to hire Belizean teachers. A U.S. teacher must come as a tourist rather than as a teacher. So. You wonder why they wouldn't want to publish their U.S. faculty names? Duh...............:)
