Hi there,
Quick question for you all.....the neuro in the First aid...is that enough? Do i need to do kaplan for it as well? Any suggestions on this?

I was going to just do First Aid (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071475311/valuetheplace-20) for neuro....unless everyone here says I need more....

Hope i get a quick reply...i have a strict study schedual and i want to stick to it. So for the next two days I'm only doing neuro.

Thanks

from my step 1, oh yea, you need more than first aid (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071475311/valuetheplace-20). one of the HY things i would have done is look at neuroimaging. very HY. even arteriograms, MRI, CT, know every slice, and what is there. there might be arrows with A-J, pointing to different points on the CT or MRI, and you have to know which one corresponds to some disease. (which first requires that you know the disease, where the problem is on the brain by word and location).

High Yield Neuroanatomy is a good book for Neuro. It's not very lengthy and covers pretty much of what you will see.

It depends on your strength in neuro. First Aid covered a goodly portion of what was tested on neuro for me (and there was a lot tested), make sure you know where everything is anatomically as well. You may want something to help you go over tracts/pathways again though.

Ok so if i use HY Neuroanatomy for neuro, how many days should i spend on it. My neuro is average. I know all the tracts, the lesions and all....i'm rough on the imaging. My exam is in August, should I concentrate on imagining closer to the exam or get it done now. How much neuro was seen on step one? I figured because of the fact that it is with anatomy/embryo/histo....it would not be that much.

Thanks.

From my experience and from what others have told me as well, neuro's getting bigger and bigger on the exam. Most of the questions are still elementary: tracts/lesions, neuroanatomy, etc. I was thrown a few curve balls about various receptors/ligands (ie NMDA experiments). But nothing outrageous.

i was surprised by the number of A-J questions, all 10 arrows pointing to different parts of the brain, and knowing the clinical vignette, and the spot where the lesion is (i.e., you know huntingtons, you know "caudate nucleus", but can you identify that from several imaging cuts).

that's the level they want you at. 3 step questions. 35 yo with spastic movements, blah blah blah, you know it's huntingtons. 2nd step is knowing caudate, and 3rd step is pointing to where it is at. i scored average on neuro on step 1, but i could have done better if i just studied an atlas before the exam. for me it would have been HY, but everyone has different questions.

Thanks guys...

Where is the best place to study neuro imaging? Is the HY neuro enough?

At this point I am confident in my knowledge of the lesions and tracts, and also the location that is effected in the brain with each disease. So the '3rd' step in the 3-step questions would basically be identifing it on the MRI or CT scan. Should I worry about this closer to the exam ....lets say in july?

What are your thoughts?

Hi guys,

Any suggestion where to find a good resource for CT, MRI ect?...

Thanks.
