A guy goes to the ER with a tender right big toe, so the med student decides to give Allopurinol .

Is that a good idea?
And what is the MOA of Allopurinol?

1) no.. cant really know if its build up of urate crystals... starting with an x-ray would be a good idea and give some aspirin as pain relief. Allopurinol is a given for chronic conditions. if dx is gout.. colchicine (for acute) or nsaid is doable.

2) inhibitor of xanthine oxidase.. which prevents the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and further onto uric acid.
