hey guys..i JUST received my admission today for the January 08 semester!!!!..I am relieved and excited to see this package. Got it in the mail 7 days after my interview. It says I have been placed on the waiting list for September 07. How often does someone on the waiting list gets that semester?
EITHER WAY, I am happy to hear that I got in for Jan 08. I wouldn't mind coming then. Time to make some money now!!
Also, since I have 7-8 months now. How should I use them in preparation for SABA? Should I do any studying? What sort of items should I start putting together in my luggage..
IM SOO EXCITEDDDD...

I'm planning on applying for Jan 08, I'm going to send in my application in the next week but then I have to wait for my Pre-Health advisor to mail out all my recommendation letters (which could take 3-4 weeks). Also I haven't taken the MCATs as yet and will be doing so in August, do you guys think it is too late by the time SGU receives my score (which should be around 9/12) to even be consider for Jan 08?
I really don't want to wait for May/August admission but if there is no point by September to even get a spot, maybe I should hold off and study for MCATs some more. What do you guys think?
Any advice would be appreciated!

For those starting in Jan 2008, you CAN make the '11 Match if you are hardcore.
Saba admin, although they mean well, will try to discourage you. We were discouraged but I think about 1/3 - 1/2 of our class made it.
No more than 4 weeks for Step 1 and plow through the rotations.
Good luck!

I SAY JUST SEND IN THE APPLICATION NOW INSTEAD OF WAITING TO TAKE YOUR MCAT.

I recently received my acceptance letter. I'm still not sure whether I'll be going to Saba though. I'm still on the waitlist at an osteopathic school and they might give me a call between Aug 1 and Aug 3 although the chances of them offering me admission at this point are quite slim. Also, I'm awaiting decisions from AUC and Ross. However, I'm leaning towards Saba. It'll probably come down to AUC vs. Saba in the end.
I got accepted for the Sep 07 but I just deferred it to Jan 08 - I am super excited to be going to SABA .... ;)
Let's all (those who got accepted for Jan 08) post our info so perhaps we can get together before we leave by finding others living in the same region

I don't think anyone gets a 4.0 in Physiology at McGill. I'd say your 3.5 is much higher than most in your class. The average is <3.0 and 1/2 of students who start in that program don't even make it through...
Also, Saba doesn't let in 99% of the applicants...
Congrats mcc0037! I'll see you there.

I just thought I would ask this here. I graduated from Michigan with a degree in Drinking Partying and Physics and Science Policy. Terrible, and I mean like Tommy boy bad, GPA, did this past year at MSU, 3.2 all pre meds, waiting for my MCATs on Sept 14. Should I apply now for Jan 08 or wait until my MCAT comes around. I will also be taking more classes this fall at MSU. And just a question to Saba peeps, why saba over AUC or SGU? For you... don't want to start the usual uninformed fight.

Hi All,
My application goes out with the Monday morning mail (August 27th). I am hoping to make it into the January '08 semester and was told there are still seats available.
I have a 3.9 GPA in my pre-med courses at San Francisco State University. I will be finished with all of my pre-reqs in Dec.
I had a 3.77 GPA in a degree completion program (Business / project management). I graduated in 2006.
I had a GPA of about 3.0 overall in my first two years of college but that was 15 years ago.
I have not taken the MCAT and won’t take it unless Saba asks me to. I'm not worried about the MCAT though. If I need to take it, I'm sure I'll do fine.
I am 34 years old, male. If I am accepted for the January semester, I will be 35 when I matriculate.
I may or may not be traveling to Saba alone (its complicated)
Just one more point I would like to make…25 is young as is 34
Hope to see you all there.

Hey Guys
I am from FL and so I am flying out of Miami because that is the only place I have found that that they will fly you direct to St Martin. Other locations (such as Orlando or Ft Lauderdale) stop in Puerto Rico and I have heard layovers there can be awful due to customs etc. Supposedly there is a good chance you would need to re-claim your baggage and check it back in which subjects you to having to go BACK through customs.... not fun especially if you are flying all day! Just thought Id give a heads up ;)

If anyone else is flying out from Atlantic Canada, check Continental. It flies from Moncton or Halifax to Newark and then right to St. Maarten... Way easier and cheaper than Air Canada. I haven't booked yet since I'm not totally sure which day I'm going to head out.

Okay i'm really confused at this point with regards to my banking information.
I recently got approved for $150K loan from RBC(Royal Bank Of Canada) i'm a Canadian coming to Saba in January. Now I have one of two options.
1. Open a US account with RBC so I can use that account while i am on the island. but RBC will not give me a credit card until after my 1st semester. so i curretly have a debit card from them.
2. 2nd option is.. leave my canadian account.. and open a bank account in SABA. then my family can wire transfer funds to SABA bank from Canada.
Can someone let me know, what bank they have on SABA? do they have RBC bank there?
Also which option of the above 2 is more suitable?
Thanx

Hello hello! Just wanted to welcome you guys to Saba.... :)
Good luck buying your plane tickets. I just got mine (from Dallas to Miami to SXM) and it cost me $900! It's pretty expensive to get tickets this time of year. Thankfully, it's my last ticket to buy ;-)
Just wanted to suggest that if you are bringing lots of (heavy) luggage - to take the boat. I am sure you all have been searching franctically through all the past posts and might already have gotten this advice. The thing is, the flights into Saba on Winair are really packed when people are coming back to school. This means that they are very picky about weight restrictions and you will pay overages and you probably won't get your luggage when you arrive on Saba unless you arrive several days before classes start.
So this being said - enjoy your time off while you have it! And if you're looking to buy books, I have some for sale for first semester. See the classified adds for more information :)
Good luck.

$900 is expensive!!! I bought my round trip from Dallas to St Martin for $900!!! My boyfriend's one way from Dallas to St Martin was only $500 and we had found one for $366, granted it makes 3 stops! :) I am going for a week and thinking of moving there in April!!! Any significant others who are moving there, please PM me! Thanks:)

Wow, so classes are getting bigger, they've sold the school and tuition has gone up by $1000 starting Jan 08;
I really hope Saba doesn't become the next Ross.

Mind you, I'm fine with all of the above, so long as it doesn't affect the quality of education...which I doubt it will.

i think they plan to be around 100 students. matthews has 18 rooms (?) so with double occupancy itd be 36 students and both hillsides combined have 12 quads so 12x4=48. 36 + 48 = 84. if you add married students to that i think it should be around 100 (possibly a little more?). maybe theyll add more housing sometime soon to increase the class sizes further but who knows.

Actually this forum was extremely helpful to my son when he first was accepted. I'm sure you all can attest it can be pretty overwhelming once you get that acceptance letter.
Just wait until you get on that boat from St. Marteen's and approaching Saba at dusk on your first day.. Looks like something out of a "B" horror flick. This outcropping of rock, not much larger than a couple of city blocks.... Dark with this cloud hanging over the peak... The approach on that 12 seater plane isn't a whole lot better either...
But... For some unseen reason most of you have all survived to this point without too much damage !!!

Hi there, well first congratulations on getting accepted. As far as Saba vs. Ross go, there are several threads on that. But I personally did not even apply to ross because after doing some research Saba seemed to be the best choice. I haven't been to Saba, will be starting my first semester in Jan 08. I figured knowing what the students at Saba think about it, is a good way to evaluate the school. I e-mailed a bunch of people who graduated from Saba, around 95 to be a little more exact, some who are in their rotations and others who are already practicing. And all of them had good things to say about saba. Many said they'd pick Saba all over again if they had to, and had no problems either with their basics, rotations or residency. I asked them specific questions, like if they would pick another school over Saba and why. Most said that they would not pick another school over saba but those who did say they would recommend another school, they recommended SGU, if one has the money to go there that is. Their reasons were mostly, its an older, more established and more known of school in the US. I agree with what they said, if I had the money, SGU it is, but that's just me. I just did not like it when I read all the things about the problems people face with Ross as far as clinicals are concerned. I know people who are there, however, and they don't mind. So its upto personal preference. That was just my two cents though. PM me anytime if you want.

Hello Everyone,
I was accepted for the January semester back in April (chose Jan because I needed time to sell my house). I'm 22 from ******* Manitoba Canada (heart of the prairies) and am really excited about coming to Saba. We (bringing the fiance and dogs) are flying out on December 28th, and to whoever said $900 was a lot, we paid $1500 each on a seat sale! Guess that's what you get living in a country with two airlines. I'll be living in the Level renting from the Petersons, and if anyone else is coming with dogs, let me know, we can set them up!
Anyone else coming from Manitoba?

Hey
I am flying from Miami to St Martin on the morning of the 2nd and then taking the last WinAir flight over to Saba. I didnt want to worry about all of my stuff and getting a hotel in St Martin and what not. I figured there would be plenty of St Martin weekends in the future.
If anyone is flying on these flights, let me know! We can meet up and not be wandering around airports/islands looking lost (people in pairs always know where they are going right?) ;)

Getting into St. Maarten on December 31.. Not exactly sure when I'm going to go over to Saba.. likely on the 3rd. I think I am going to be taking the boat there as well.. Don't want to fly on one of those tiny planes with all my stuff when I first get there. If anyone knows any good places to stay in St. Maarten let me know... You can also post on the facebook group we have going for the Jan '08 class..

I was accepted for Jan '08 this past Thursday. I'm 24/F currently living in Metro Detroit working as an ER Tech. I like the boat idea... I'll make it to the island by Jan 3rd-ish. Don't know where I'm living yet, I'm thinking Matthews with a roommate.

Hey, I am flying into St. Martin on the 30th...I am going to have to stay there for at least one day, because I will have already missed the last flight over to Saba...I was thinking that I will probably just go to Saba on the 31st and spend new years there, because there I will have a home to go to!!! also, I don't know if you have looked into rooms on St. Martin...they are crazy expensive!! but, i did talk to someone from Saba who said that they can set me up with a cheap room for the night while waiting to get to Saba...but i can't decide where to spend new years!!!! send me an email...maybe we can figure something out together!! nabulhus@yahoo.com, my name is Nina...

Hello my fellow Jan 2008 classmates
I have been reading so many things on SABA and the education that awaits us. I know that I dont know you and you dont know me yet, however, I believe all of us have worked very VERY hard to get here in our own way. We share something very important and I hope that we all can play as a team and get through it and we will.
I have a friend that graduated from SABA last year and she told me everyone starts out weary of what lies ahead on the island. She made SABA what she wanted it to be. She worked hard, focused on one goal "to succeed", forgot about luxery (sometimes water ), and truly was the best doctor she can be. Every rotation she did in the US she stood out for working so hard and knowing so much bc she worked on that. This is what she did for herself, no one can do that for us so we have to do it.
There is no failure in life as long as you keep moving. It is not about the medical school or mcat scores it's about refusing to be stopped. We should try to to stay focused on our goal yet be flexible enough to adapt to differnt situations.
I wish you all the very best and really look forward to meeting some very strong and determined people that are willing to go and make thier dreams come true.
WIth Care,
NG

So a pre-school/LOC spendathon NYE party is in the making. We are trying to get as many people as possible to stay at the Captain Olivers Hotel in St. Maarten. Four have confirmed so far. It will be a gong show, no doubt. Hope to see many of you there.
