Is there any sport climbing on Saba. I am accepted into the Sept. semester and I think this is the one hobby of mine I'll be able to take with me to the island. No sense in bringing in a bunch of equipment if there are no climbers or climbing routes though.

Most of the rock is incredibly overgrown - this is jungle territory. Not much good climbing rock.

I am not personally a climber, but it is possible to climb on Saba. One of my house-mates on the island had his entire gear with him. I will try to get his contact info for you. I'm not sure who owned the rope that they used, but I know he had his own stuff with him. Primarily they climbed near the Sulfur Mine trail.. Good luck,
JS

It is very possible. Me and couple othe guys regularly run the trails and have seen many climbable locations. There was a climber//diver here a while back who also tried to make SABA a climbing /diving vacation spot, but it never panned out --> Not sure why, but you can read more about that on the seasaba.com website.
I think it would be awesome If you could get some good climbing in here.

couple guys have gear, and routes, but precious little time...:(
bring your gear if you want. "W" in 3rd semester is a big time climber, "R" at Sea Saba climbs, and "S" in 2nd brought gear i think.
most of the time we just free climb, there's some good free climbing even if the routes aren't that long. "W" gave a few of us a crash course during 1st. I have seen anchors in place on whale back though.

Awesome. This was just the info I was looking for. I suppose I'll just bring my shoes and chalk for 1st semester then. Thanks krust3

hey man, I brought a rope, some draws, and a little pro down to the island this semester. I've yet to get out, but I plan to check out the bolted route on the whale-back after block exams on monday. I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers.

I am the climber that JS Paramedic was referring to. Yes there are a few routes on Saba. A few people to talk to: Mike from Brigadoons and Sue from the Marine Park.
There are bolts on the back of the whale, but not easily accessable. Also there are some routes at the sulfur mines with bolts at the top. The one up the middle is best to lead climb first (straight up the crack), make the anchor from the bolts at the top (Mike can show you most likely). From there you can see/access the other anchors. Then you can top-rope all day long, showing people how to climb, etc. As long as you can lead a 5.9/5.10 (depending on who you ask...nothing on Saba is actually graded) you can do it. Mike will direct you, but I'm not sure he can lead it. The crux is def the start  (use a good fist jam to set your first piece above the rock that is jammed in the crack). You'll see what I mean if you get Mike to take you out to the spot.
Another spot that is hard to get to but climbable is the tower overlooking Saba's only straight stretch of road. If you can hike up there...there is a trail that goes around the back of the tower (to the left of it I think) and you can set up an anchor from the top. It's an easy climb (prob a 5.7 or so with tons of buckets) but the rock has a tendency to break....I really don't recommend this spot. Best bet is the Sulfur Mines.
Hope that helps.
