Hey guys, So I don't know if anyone would be interested but it would be cool if we had the May class '07 (or any current students on the Island) start a thread or webpage about the living conditions, classes, first impressions, etc and maybe even have some pics and videos on youtube to document your experiences so that any incoming students can check out what life really is.
I was on youtube and checked out SGU on there and people had posted a few things. I don't know I'm just tossing out the idea and interested in seeing what people think about it. Hopefully I'll be practicing what I'm preaching in September.
cheers,
Fefe

The only thing I can say is ... it's not that bad. The most memorable part when I first arrived was that I got bitten a lot. Don't wear shorts around unless you don't mind bug bites. I used bug repellent but it didn't work. I used a tube of anti-itch cream in a semester and scarred for life. They were so itchy. They weren't mosquitoes but some kind of other bugs.
Then, after a while..you'll begin missing your favorite food.
But honestly, after school starts, all you will be doing is study and study and study....... and you can get burned out especially towards the end of the semester. But no worries, just hang in there and time passes by so fast! You won't even notice what day of the month it is because you will study every day.
:D
Don't worry. Keep an open mind and a positive attitude and it makes the whole experience 100000000x better ;)

got here onthe 23rd... the place is amazing.. couldnt ask for a better island... the locals are very nice they wave to you when you walk by and very helpful...
make sure you bring plenty of shorts or clothes that are really light... cause it does get a little hot during the day but nothing crazy... the sun just beats on you.... once 4 or 5 pm rolls around it gets really really comfortable...
Also when youfirst arrive on the island, ross really do take care of you... they pick you up from the airport and will give you water... make sure you take the dramamine that they offer you.... it is a very rough ride... once you arrive on campus they put you in RUH for a night.. and once you get your stuff in your room and settled in.. the welcoming committee consisting of students will take you to a place to eat and give youa tour of campus... they are very nice and also very helpfull.. ask them anything cause they are mainly upper classmen students so they know the ropes...
the next day the staff will provide you with breakfast and then take you on a housing tour if you dont already have one ... i was very happy with the place that im living in.. great view great landlord... maid service, laundry, and close to campus...but make sure once you see something that you like you tell your housing person right away ause nice apt will go fast...and you will end up living far away from campus...
so this is my third day here and everything has just been great.. the island is nice.. the ppl are friendly... all the upper classmen and locals wave to you and says hi... lots of variety of food and a lot of them are pretty good too....made a couple of real good friends.. and just getting tips form the upperclassmen.. they love to help 1st sem...
once you get here ross also sponsersthese activities fo ryou to do.. we went into Roseau today.. and they have everything you would need there... there is water sports tommrow... so lots to do and just enjoy the atmosphere before school starts...
but make sure you bring down enough money to cover the deposit for housing and tax... as well as money for food and essentials for two weeks.. cause loan checks doesnt kick in till orientation whichis the 4th i think...
There is all ready a site like this, but I don't know if it has video capability. Please see:

Hey guys,
roughly how much is housing tax? if I'm paying roughly $1400/month for a place how much would the tax be monthly? or is it a one time fee.

Tax? I never paid tax the whole time I was on the island.

VAT (Value Added Tax) is 10%. Some places don't charge it, some include it in the price, and others charge it seperately. The VAT is once a month when you pay your rent.

My family and I came up tuesday the 24th. we're enjoying. little slower pace to be sure. the people are lovely and unpretinous. When you negotiating or talking with landlord about the lease agreement, dont be afraid to say what you think in a respectful way of course. They are very up front people. Be sure to write down the changes you make to the lease, so that you may move and get out of your lease if certain things like a tv provided or something fixed in the apartment doesnt happen.
we live in glanvilla which is about 8 mins from the annex by foot. only a minute ride by transport, which is 1 EC or 30 cents US. many families live here. we havent met many people but the ppl weve met are very nice.
bugs havent been that bad for us. my daughters havent been bit yet. food is a challenge, especially for a family of four. bring snacks like chips and chocolates and little deby type foods.
pm me if you have a family and need more info.

Also, there's an IGA in Roseau that stocks a lot of junk food, as do Tina and James. Even the corner shops have junk food. Although, if you're hooked on Captain Crunch or some specific variety, you might want to ship a barrel from Miami.
Yeah, I'm still on the rock over break. I love it, here! I'm going to see if I can do 5th in Roseau! This place is awesome.
