Hey, I was just wondering how the ATM's worked. Are you allowed to use your US ATM card and do they charge fees for it? What is the norm for ATM usuage on the island for students? Do most students use their US ATM cards or do you set up an account with the bank on the island for ATM usage?

The quick of it is, you can get an island account, use your bank back home or get an account with BofA and goto Scotiabank. ATMs are plentiful and available.

well, they're these electric machines with a lot of buttons on the front. They beep. Push the buttons in the right order and most of the time they'll give you money, unless you urgently need it. That's when they break down.

Lot of people got jacked from Scotia last semester... I don't remember the details... search for it if you're interested. I think the island ATM is worth it if you're gonna be here for 20+ months. They charge like $.56 a transaction.

ATM's have worked fine for me. I would say 99% of the time there is no fee. Talk to your bank back home and have them waive your fees from them and up the amount you can take out in a day.

Whenever you do withdraw cash, ALWAYS make sure to get a receipt. Make sure the machine is working. Make sure no one is looking over the back.

I highly recommend Bank of America. Before you come down here, go in and talk to your bank manager about being an international student. By doing this, he set me up so that I can use ANY ATM for no charge. Plus, I am covered from any fraud, which came in handy when someone on the island had somehow gotten a hold of my credit card number (i have a Visa through them, as well) and used to it purchase make-up in Paris.

Last semester there was an incident where like half the school had their ATM numbers stolen from the atm. It had to be an inside job, how else could they possibility get so many student numbers. Luckily BofA who I have flagged the account when weird purchases were being made and I didn't loose a dime. Some poor students weren't so lucky and had to wait more than a week for their money to be returned.

not sure where it happened. I only use scotia bank if possible, b/c I have Bank of America account. No fees since soctia is owned by BofA. Could have been that atm, it is frequented by many students.

Scotia is *NOT* owned by BofA. Scotiabank (Bank of Nova Scotia) is a canadian bank who has an agreement with BofA for customers from either bank to use their ATMs at no charge.
