Hello everyone. I will be starting at AUC in September. As an avid diver (advanced open water certified), I am hoping to get in a few dives before school (and the studying) begins. Can anyone give me a recommendation on the best dive shop(s) on the island?
Thanks,
HoundDog

Dive Safari and there is one more in Pelican Key.... just down the rock road from Bucaneer's Bar. I forgot the name.

I'd go with Dive Safari...I've been diving with them a couple of times and they did a great job. Very professional staff and knowledgable divemasters. I'd go to the one in Simpson Bay though because they have fewer cruise ship customers. It's also much closer to AUC. The one in phillipsburg is right by the cruise ship pier.

There is a diving club at AUC (or I assume there still is one), anyone have the contact info?
I dove alot while on the island, i used dive adventures at at pelican bay. I was very happy with them, i also took several advanced classes with them.
But when i was back for graduation i went with them a few times and i was not impressed. They had some new dive masters who did not know the sites well ( i knew the layouts and bouy locations better than them). Also they brought us down on the wrong site and completed screwed up my dive profile.
as for Dive Safari in simpson bay, i have only dove with them once and had a great time, the folks that own the shop are very good ( i bought and rented some gear from them) I have never heard a bad thing about them.

I sincerely regret not getting certified while I was down on the island, that and missing out on sports fishing.

I thought the idea of having to give up your catch didn't appeal to me at all. I chose not to fish because of that reason along with the high costs being charged.

Anyone know how much it costs to get certified down there? And how long does it take?

Not long. You can do it over the break between semesters or piecemeal it out over a couple of weekends.
I knew people who did it both ways.
Longest part were the videos you have to watch and the bookwork. Mindless but time consuming.

couple hundred bucks and a couple days for dives.....it was much less involved than the training I got back home before i went to the island. You can do it quickly and cheap down there but make sure you read up on your own bc there are obvious dangers with not knowing what you are doing
