No idea, but it was on my test with a diagram and I did "ee-nee-manee-moe, catch a tiger his toe"

 Thats exactlly what I do with questions I have never heard before.
I just found out this

vdj system is the means by which b cells are able to produce variety in the variable regions of the antibodies they produce
the genes for Ig light chains have V and J segments - which undergo recombination; similarly, the genes for Ig heavy chains have V, J and D segments
the enzyme responsible for recombination between v, j and d is called tdt. its found in pro-B and pre-B cells. after v, d, and j are rearranged, the next genetic element downstream from them is the mu gene which codes for IgM - which is why IgM is the native configuration of antibodies before class switching occurs.
after recombination, if the product is functional, the rearrangement process is turned off. the antibody molecule is now able to recognize antigens which match their vdj configuration.
here's a pic from images.google:

its been 3 months since ive looked at this stuff, so feel free to correct any mistakes - lange micro+immuno and the kaplan immuno notes are a good reference for this stuff. each devotes a chapter to the topic

I knew what it was. But they were asking the mechanism by which it works in relation to particular diagram. I sat there blubbering and crying for a minute.
