Seems like they got one Cali spot in a community program (Kaiser Permanente Southern California, Anaheim, CA) for Family Medicine. Interesting................

THE CANADIAN matches are amazing. Uof T surgery, Orthopetic surgery and Anast. at UWO and Mac... That is definitely impressive.
I wonder how many knew people there before. SGU did not have anything like this... and ROSS, I did not see any canadian matches.

Yep, I'm on that match list. THANKFULLY! I'm thanking God for that one over and over and over......
The guy who matched in Cali is from Cali and it was always his goal to go back. As for where he'll end up afterwards - if he's determined I'm sure he'll stay, but he could change his mind in three years.
I know most of the people who matched in Canada as well. When I was on Saba there was a VERY active group of Canadians with the primary goal of getting back into Canada. I'm not sure how much of that hand any effect on their matches or how many of them simply knew people (although I know most of them did rotate back in Canada and probably knew people). The one who matched FP in Newfoundland is from there and her father is an FP - the one match Ortho, I have no idea if he knew someone although he was in my class. The two anesthesia were in my class as the one general surgery (actually I'm guessing at the numbers since I only looked at the list once) and they all rotated there and it's very likely they knew people.
At any rate, my point is that early on they looked into what it would take to get back into Canada and they tried every route they could. Canada is just starting to open back up as far as letting in docs that aren't Canadian trained. Any Canucks who are in their first two years and want to go back to Canada start working on it now. And do your best to do rotations up there. It can be risky business, but if it's what you want go for it. And show off your skills while rotating - if you want to be in that program bust your tail. They'll notice!
Best of luck all!

there were a few canadian matches this year, but not really sure how many actually went through the canadian match this year. Also most people at sgu- canadian or otherwise are usually looking for a US residency.

You can't tell me a Canadian SGU student would not go to a Canadian residency program if given the choice. Gotta give props to the Canadians from Saba who had the balls to go for it. These guys will make it easier for future Canadians from Saba to match into Canadian residencies.

yes and no. If the Canadian Match was easier for nationals attending foreign schools, you would probably have more canadians going to foreign schools. This is the 1st year that foreign students have been able to enter the 1st round, so maybe down the road that will be the case. However there are many Canadians (at least at sgu) that have green cards and want to practice in the US or are willing to live along the border to be able to make the amount of money a US physician can make. Others end up marrying an American classmate and have no choice!!:D
from my understanding (correct me if i am wrong), but saba (% wise at least) has a larger canadian presence than sgu(in my class there are maybe 30 canadians?) so more are willing to try to get back?
Like I said earlier though- kudos to saba for matching students in the canadian match- its no small feat!

This could quite possibly be the case. Not sure how it happened, but my class (beginning Sept 2003) was 50% Canadian (out of around 60+ students). It looks like we may have the same number of Canadians but a higher percentage. There were classes after mine that had many as well.
At any rate, it's great to see that many of my friends were able to get back home, or at least close to home. And yes, many do want to practice in the US for many reasons. As long as they got what they wanted!!!
Best of luck all!

I'm not criticizing the posters on this thread in particular, but it seems that it is impossible to say anything good about a school on these forums without someone chiming in to try to justify why their particular school is just as good or better.
Can't we all just agree that there were some impressive matches in Canada without adding "compared to SGU" or "those results are due to the larger Canadian contigent at Saba"?
To really evaluate how impressive those results are we would have to know how many people actually attempted the Canadian match. If half of the students from Saba tried for a Canadian residency then I'm still not that excited about my chances when I finish.

I was not comparing or saying one is better than the other. I was just wondering since I applied there.

well, yes, you are.

well if you will note - i was one of the 1st to say congrats about the number of canadian matches- and thats with no comparsions, nothin. I however DID respond to a later post saying that "SGU doesn't have anthing like that" by noting that while there are some canadian matches, that there aren't as many canadian at sgu as saba and that perhaps not as many of the canadians that ARE at sgu really looked into the canadian match.
To really evaluate how impressive those results are we would have to know how many people actually attempted the Canadian match. If half of the students from Saba tried for a Canadian residency then I'm still not that excited about my chances when I finish.
it still does not take away from the fact that there were a number of canadian matches- its how the ground work is started. 10 years from now, when saba has built a reputation among certain canadian programs as having good graduates who become good residents and saba applicants are given that interview or selected for a program, these are the people you will have to thank fro opening that door.

My only point was that it is difficult to say anything positive about a school anywhere on these forums without someone trying to promote their own school. It's as if people think that something good for Saba (e.g. good Canadian matches) is bad for Ross, AUA, AUC, or whatever school they attend. It's just kind of frustrating.
When I see a bunch of people matching from St. Mathews I think to myself "that's great, I'm glad that those people succeeded." I don't think "I better say that their match list is garbage and tell them how good Saba's is." I think Caribbean schools should be a little more supportive of each other.
I'm not saying anyone in this thread was trying to do that, I'm just saying that I see that a lot on these forums. and some of the posts here reminded me of that fact.
Sorry for the deviation from the original topic of this thread.
