I would definitely suggest a pda at any site. When I started psych, I used my pda to look up drugs probably 15-20 times per day. Even now in FP I use it probably 5-10 times per day to look up drugs and/or look up stuff in harrison's. It's also not a bad idea to carry a pen light at some sites.

when i first started my pockets were filled with 2 quick reference books, 1 pocket drug guide, my mobile, my PDA, enough pens to rewrite the constitution for every student, articles, penlight, pocket otoscope/opthalmoscope, hand sanitizer, gloves, extra supplies for blood draws, etc
ELCW (estimated lab coat weight) - 20+ pounds
by the time i finished my lab coat consisted of patient notes shoved into 1 pocket and cookies shoved in the other. The pen I had I swiped from someone. As you go further into clinicals you realize its less important about carrying everything ever created in medicine.....also uptodate is better than any quick reference book and my PDA just got annoying.....Actually on top of what i just mentioned i would also carry a pocket drug guide, and when in GI spare lube

Maxwell's pocket guide, and a drug reference are enough for Wyckoff (aside from the stethoscope). So which rotation were you assigned to?

pen light is a must, as is some sort of antiseptic. i also keep a small drug reference and a spanish medical translator.

You'll find the purell dispenser by the door of each patient room. There are sinks with antibacterial soap in most patient rooms. If you don't know Spanish it wouldn't hurt to have a Spanish-English dictionary. Pen light does come in handy.

now is that pen light for medical or personal purposes? Like for blackouts?

Not really, more like when the attending wants to examine a patient and realizes that he doesn't have a penlight...he then turns to the residents, who also don't have a penlight, then they turn to you...Good medical student, good medical student. ;)
