How hard is it for SGU grads to get into EM???? Is it as competive as some of the other specialties?

look on the sgu residency list. many EM matches. EM is harder than IM but easier than surgery

The "hardness" cannot be categorized on some scientific scale. Everything is relative. Compare the stats of different us schools to those posted from sgu and make your own conclusions. Also, check out the housestaff listing on different em residency websites. Do keep in mind that it is currently a pretty popular specialty for reasons spanning from melodramatic television shows to the shift work lifestyle.

EM is getting harder to get every year. Dr. M**** in Career guidance stated on the residency list that only 22 students got it this year which was the lowest number of accepted students ever.

Wonder why that is? I would have thought that the shift work would make this specialty less desirable.

not really! in EM, once you are off, you are off! you cant get call back on, unless there is a huge emergency, but then most docs are called back for that anyway. and in EM there is no rounding! dd i mention there is no rounding?
and i know many EM physicians who have the schedule that tehy woould work 4 12hrs shift/week and they would get the whole next week off (remember , when they are off, they are off, they dont get called back on) and they would do this type of schedule and love it. so basicallythey work every other week. of course these are the senior physicians who get to choose more or less their own schedule. but you get the point.

but the question is ...how many peopel APPLIED for EM. Are the numbers lower because less student were interested? Or because it is harder for sgu students to get?

everything has a cycle and EM's popularity rose because of tv shows like ER- now that grey's is THE medical tv show- maybe more people are interested in surgery!!!

You can't say anything about why only 22 poeple went into ED. maybe only 22 applied. last year an sgu student i know was cancelling EM interviews becuase he had too many. It may be a trend or it may be more competitive. I havent heard that it got more competitive; in fact it peaked in the late 1990's though is still a challenging field to get. You can't go by lifestyle alone. you really have to want to do ED or you'll burn out in no time. Not everyone wants it. Lord knows i certainly didnt.

I don't know what the answer is. Dr. M**** indicated it was due to popularity not less applicants. But I am not sure.

Diagnostic medicine...sounds like internal medicine. We diagnose everything, but fix nothing. :D

i wil say this; sgu doesnt usually try to lie about these things, but they may not know. i dont know that anyone can know but i dont see a big consipracy here. the only way you can get a sence is check the general competitiveness of the field this year compared to the last few eyars and see if its a general trend. it still doesnt answer the question but its more info. anyuway another example of people seeing a crisis where there likely isnt any.
