Can anyone quickly summarize the meeting? or at least comment on it. How many people showed up? I know they had Pizza at the meeting.

I was too busy watching ER episodes and since I have already made my choice to go to SVG I didn't feel like listening to the prim minister try to sell us how wonderful SVG is. Although I would have loved to have a picture taken with a prime minister of the country.. Would make for some great stories.

Did the Prime Minister of St. Vincent come to Grenada to talk to 4th termers?

He basically sat in front of us and told us that SV is lovely and we should all want to go there. To quote, "We are readying the SV airforce to come get the students and bring them to our country." - SV Acting Prime Minister.

But, nothing new was said. They said how much they appreciate the relationship that we have had for 28 year and were hoping to keep it going. They reiterated that things are safer than we think. They also said that the landlords have formed an association in order to bring each other more information and to make decisions on how to keep people safer.

Unfortuntely for them, I got the distinct impression that they didn't realize that many people had long ago made up their minds and that this was all in vain. I felt more pity for them at how they were reacting to this "crisis" than anything else.

this is going to hurt a lot of people in SVG who's only source of income was renting apts or cars to SGU students. but what did they think was going to happen. maybe if they were proactive instead of reactive this wouldn't happen. They should have known better than to assume that we students wouldn't do anything about it and just allow for us to be victimized.

Yes the SVG prime minister and the chief of police and some other government officials came to try to convince us 4th termers to go to SVG next term. because they know their economy will suffer greatly if we don't go.

SVG has an air force? Damn, learn something new everyday......and what planes exactly do they fly? Maybe they charter the little yellow planes from SVG air.....hahahaha

The truth is that the majority of the landlords and business people we deal with in SVG are very nice and look after us well. Too bad their livelihoods will be affect so greatly, but they should have acted sooner on our concerns rather than letting it get to this point.

Its sad that the actions of a few criminals can have an affect on so many lives.

I do applaud the SVG prime minister for coming to talk to the students. Do you think his reassurances convinced any of the 4th termers to go to St. Vincent next term?

No, first of all he came way to late and most of the people that wanted to stay in GND had already put down deposits on off camups apts. also the only reason he came to talk to us is because he knows that this will greatly effect his countries economy and will impact the lives of many people since their only source of income was either renting apts or cars to the students or providing other services to the students. The gourmet supermarket will now also suffer, and so will many other supermarket because the students are the only ones who can really afford to shop their.

It's expected that only about 60 or 80 students from a class of 350 will be going to SVG, the rest will be staying in GND.

Do you think so many students are staying in Grenada because of fear or because it is inconvenient to move? Not having to relocate would definately be a motivating factor for me to stay in Grenada.

It's probably both. people are used to this island they know where everything is and don't feel like moving. Also I heard that the supermarket is bigger and has more of a selection than on SVG. But safety is definitely an issue as well.

Yes, the supermarkets in GND are better. RealValue has almost everything you need plus, hard as it is to believe, it's actually cheaper than Aunt Jobe's Supermarket in SVG. Between Realvalue & Foodfair, you don't hafta go anywhere else for your needs. As opposed to SVG where you sometimes hafta shop at several diff. markets to get what you want.
Another plus is the better bus schedule at GND than SVG.
There's lots more perks to GND vs SVG, but I'm sure some of u know already...

Yes aunt jobes in SVG may probably be more expensive than IGA in GND, and you might have to go to a few different supermarkets here. However, the supermarkets are on the way to/from the hospital so it really isn't out of your way. If you can shop at Sunrise and Food City, I can guarantee you will be saving A LOT of money compared to IGA in GND. I only eat in my apt in SVG compared to 3-5 times a week at Sugar Shack/Glovers when i was in GND and I still spend way less money on groceries during 5/6 term here in SVG.

As far as the buses go, mostly everyone rents a car so that usually isn't an issue. The majority of apt rents plus car rental still is less than what we payed on campus in GND, but it might be worth staying in GND with all the security issues that people are having here. If anyone is considering coming to SVG, I am currently at a safe apt and would gladly put you in touch with my landlord.

wow.. i dont know what led up to this but all you kids who think you are benefiting in any way shape or form by spending another semester in grenada are sorely mistaken. Myself and many of my classmates considered our semester in SVG a gift for all the hard work we put in over the past 1.5 years. It is a fantastic island (esp. when compared to a dump like grenada) full of lovely friendly people (I'll spare the grenada comparison) and there is nothing better then getting away from the rest of the school to get a chance to get to know your own classmates a little better. The hospital in SVG is great as are the docs who take time to teach us that half day a week we spend there. Think about this decision guys.. I know SVG is not for everyone.. especially the "hide on campus and pray for it to be over" but for you more adventurous types dont miss out on a great opportunity while you still have the chance!

lol i think all the adventurous types lost their adventure seeking mood after what happened on the island. But there are some still out there who do want to experience a new island, I am one of them. based on the survey I think only about 40 to 50 people are going to SVG next term.
