Has anyone heard if SGU has finally arranged for a charter flight for pets? Last I heard it was in the works, but not actualized. I need to get a pet off this island, but don't want to be forced to fly out by the end of April due to the pet embargo.

Any info is greatly appreciated!!!

The content of this post is strange, but I think I agree with the gist of the message. I WOULD NOT have brought my pet with me to Grenada had I known the problems that would ensue. He has had constant allergies, and skin irritations on his feet due to allergies. There are many loose dogs on the street and rough terrain for walking, further irritating his feet.

Now the freaking embargo that was enforced after we already brought him to Grenada, will not enable me to get him home. SO FRUSTRATING! It would have been sad to leave him back in the states, but at least he would have been healthier and not stuck here! My 2 cents for prospective students thinking about bringing their pets.

The flight (as they calculated last term) would have been almost $700 US per person OR pet, so I don't think they did it - and I don't know if it will happen for this term. Ask your class rep or the ladies in the Chancellery vet administrative office. They may be able to help. The last post was ludicrous - pets are not a problem here at all, and they have a wonderful time. There are just logistics that you need to work out responsibly. Either do a charter, or send them via Amerijet like I do with my dog and cat. Perhaps this American thing will work out eventually (I'm keeping my fingers crossed). Good luck!

Have heard bad stories about shipping pets through Amerijet (see the link below), and have also heard that it was o.k. Would not want to chance it.

I brought my pet with me and would do it again. We came down before the blackout, though.

As stated, your only options are for Amerijet or American during the non blackout period.

I have not needed to use amerijet and I know that there have been justifiable bad experiences, but I think the majority of people who have used them have not had any serious problems.

There is the possibility of flying Liat. I spoke to the Deans office a little regarding this subject and they will eventually end up in San Juan, PR. This may be an option to check on.

I transported my pets back and forth to Grenada, twice, on Amerijet. I had no problems with them. The only problem for some is that you must have someone pick them up in Miami, although there are US services that will transport them to your final destination on another flight though.

Really, Amerijet worked really well for me. I would recommend it.

I never brought a pet into the country, but did rescue one from SVG and would only recommend NEVER (ever) to go through Barbados. They can (and will) make your life a living hell and charge you more than you can imagine. So if you must, I think I'd recommend San Juan or Amerijet too. But not Barbados. Barbados is bad.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Called the Vet Dean's office this AM (thanks Badkitty). For those concerned about the same issue......according to the Vet Dean's office there was/is not enough interest in a charter flight or pet relocation service, so many students are using Amerijet afterall.

Looked into Liat and this involves quite a bit of island hopping (which can take about 5 hrs) to San Juan and the pet cannot ride in the cabin. As far as I understand, this option also involves stopping and showing pet paperwork in Antigua. Would definately be an option for someone not willing to ship, but would add a few hours to travel time. Also, I don't know about the temperature issue in mid-summer. Could possibly be a better option in winter.

Will stay away from Barbados.

Just to hype Amerijet again, the area the pets travel in is temperature and pressure controlled, so no concerns about weather. This is different than the other airlines, which treat the pets like cargo. Also, the flight from Grenada goes direct to Miami, so no scary repeated descents into different countries. Barbados IS a problem, and going Amerijet avoids this.

Personally, I'm trying to get my dog home for the summer too, but I'm considering staying and watching other people's dogs to make a little $$$ - more than a summer vet job would pay me at this stage of the game! Good luck trying to get your animals on the plane - I'm trying too - but if you decide to leave them for the summer, feel free to send me a message and let me know if you need a sitter. If I do send him home, I will do so with Amerijet and I have to say I've never had a problem with them. But as stated upthread, you need to arrange for someone in Miami to meet your animal at the warehouse, either yourself, a friend, or a company like pettransporter.com or some such thing. That is the only caveat. Good luck!
