Hey everyone,
I am new to the whole valuemd forum so please be kind. The reason why I am asking for help is because I am a medical student from United Kingdom. I have done 3 years (of possible 5) of medicine in U.K but unfortunately I was unsuccessful in one of the modules. Prior to my year 3 exam there had been longstanding family problem and only a few days before the results were published my mother was diagnosed with mental illness. I have supporting letters from my family doctor, the consultant who is treating my mother and academic staff from my medical institute to prove that my mothers illness and problems at home has had an adverse effect on my academic performance.

Nevertheless, as things stand at the moment, I am a medical school dropout. I really do want to get back in medicine but am finding it really hard in U.K. The Caribbean university is looking very appealing but I am really concerned if they will accept me or not. SMU and other Caribbean universities clearly states that they are looking for graduates student and even though I feel that I have enough education and experience; I do not yet have a degree. All I will be applying with is my A Level results and individual module marks for my 3 year in medicine.

What is really stressing me out at the moment is that the more and more research I am doing, I am finding out just how competitive medicine is in Caribbean universities. I feel that my grades will not count for much against a highly competitive GPA and MCAT scores and the fact that I am a medical school dropout is not going to do me no favours either.

My question to you is there any realistic chances of me getting in SMU given the circumstances? Do I need to do any further courses? And is there an alternative?

SMU does take transfer students. I would call their office, and talk to an administrator. I don't know how the curriculum where you've completed most of your education correlates with SMU's or the "American" style medical education, but they may let the courses transfer over. Good luck, and don't loose hope.

Hey i got in with just my A level results
you will be required to do premed down at sussex.

Study Medicine :: Medical & Dental schools in the UK and Abroad (http://www.readmedicine.com) for more info about sussex

compared to A levels, this is a piece of cake
so don't worry about being competitive.

Hi
I had a question.I really like the school, and i really want to come here but there are a few things.I have a gpa of 3.0 with a science gpa of 2.85 from a good school.I wasnt planning on coming to SMU before, but after i got turned down from SABA,SMU was the next best thing.Anyhow,i didnt have MCAT and since its mandatory this yr,i hastly enrolled in it,studied for it for 3 weeks(i know it sounds retarded, but i was desparate) i wrote it on Jan29, and ended up with a 6PS,7BS,9Verbal and an R on the writing component)I kow i did bad but it was actually an encouraging experience for me bcoz iknow i barely studied, cudnt finish any section and did good on those which dont require memorization(verbal and writing). So ill be writing it again on Jun15.NOW,i need to know if i shud declare my earlier score,or tell them to wait for the june15 score, which shud come out by early July.Spots for sept get filled up quickly, but i dont want to jeaporadize my application with a weak MCAT(22R).
ANy guidance on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Contact the admissions department and let them know your situation. You could also post on the school's official forum. They may answer your question there. If your just looking for an opinion, I'd say apply now.

Apply now. I got in with stats comparable to yours. ;) As long as you have clinical/research/lab experience, a good personal statement/letters of reccs, and an awesome interview, you will be fine. :D
