Hey everyone!!

I was just wondering what SMU's match rate is?
And what specialist programs are we able to get for our reseidencies?
Is is possible to do cardiology?
According to someone on admission, dermatology and i think radiology is not offered anymore for residencies for SMU grads in the states...
I'm confused... anyone know what our options are for specializing?
thanks a bunch

Dermatology and radiology are two very hard residencies to get even for u.s. grads........ smu grads arent singled out and denied these, it is possible to get them just really hard...heck, a guy from st. james matched in radiology last year

Residency Placement, St. Matthews School of Medicine - Caribbean Medical Schools, Offshore Medical Schools, Foreign Medical Schools - International (http://www.stmatthews.edu/residencyplace.html)

This is the 2007 SMU residency placements. I don't see cardiology there, but I see other very competitive residencies such as OBGYN, surgery, neurology, etc. As long as you work hard and have the grades, you can do whatever you want.

you dont see cardiology there, because it is not a residency....Its a fellowship which you apply AFTER you do an Internal Medicine Residency......
Now if they did updates on all the grads, that would be great!

Ahhh, thanks. that's what I thought at first, you go residnecy in IM then do a fellowship, but I was uncertain about it. I don't know too much about residency, and I barely know about clinicals even though I'm starting in a month. Clueless I am:confused:

What the heck, I'm just going to play devil's advocate here. In general, Ob/Gyn and neurology have not been that competitive for the past several years. Surgery is competitive and so is EM (at least for FMG's). Don't just look at specialties though. Look at where these residencies are. For example, IM can be very competitive at places like Mayo or big-name university programs but may also not be competitive at a smaller suburban community hospital.

Also, sometimes it takes more than hard work and grades to do what you want. Sometimes, it takes knowing the right people. Sometimes knowing the right people may not even help. That's just the reality of things.

Congratulations for all those who matched!

As above Derm/Rad are competitive residencies but it doesn't mean that it is not doable. If you have the grades and right connections it is possible. There are actually SMU grads who are in fellowshiops including critical care. Anesthesia is competitive right now but SMU did have few grads matching there as well as Surgery. Specialization has several factors... program (i.e., university vs. community based), research, board scores, residency performance, and knowing right people at right places. As an SMU grad, you can "apply" to any residency but it doesn't mean that you'll get an interview. And yes, SMU grad can apply for Derm/Rad or any respect specialty depending on their field of medcine. As a student, focus on your studies/board exams and than worry about residency. Unfortunately, I've heard of students from several different carribean schools who never made it pass the boards. Good luck.
