Hi,

I am currently a student of the University of the West Indies completingmy Bsc in Chemistry. I am expected to graduate with Lower Second Class Honours..barely.

I know that students based on the UK system are evaluated differently but I know imstill not a very strong candidate.

I am considering doing a Masters for 1 year to improve my application. I was considering Biomedical Sciences but as my Bsc is in Chemistry that is proving to be a hindrance.

Does anyone have any suggestions of fields of study that I would be eligible for that would assist in making me a stronger candidate?

Also anyone did Uk undergrad and at SGU? Mind posting ur stats?

Thanks in advance

PS Posted here rather than in the General Section because SGU is where im interested in attending

Your situation, which is very common, is an example of how easy it is to become a "professional" student. Out of desperation, one goes for one degree after another simply to impress a medical school commitee. And not surprisingly, it is easy to get very disillusioned by the whole process. As such, my suggestion to you is try and get an advanced degree in something you at least like...otherwise your time spent (without a guarantee of acceptance to a medical school), will be pure misery...and even worse, a waste of time. The worst thing you could do is pick a specialty that you hate, but think will impress someone.

I would advise you to apply and then they will take a look at your application as a whole. I don't think second class honors is really that weak.

Give it a try first before persuing a masters if medicine is what you really want to do. If you have any extracurricular activities don't forget to put them on your application.

Agree with you to the extent that it should be in somemthing I like as it still does not guarantee me admission to med school.

Unfortunately however..we dont have post-bacc programs where I can improve my science gpa...and shadowing and research opportunities are a joke.

So thanks for you response...but if thats the only way of improving my chances I'm prepared to undertake it

Post-bacc programs are money-making operations...nothing more...nothing less. It is not something you should really expect to push you over the top (even if you did have access to one).

All I am saying is be careful, as grad school, if not chosen carefully can end up being more of a burden than an advantage. As such, it is my opinion that you should not try to pick a difficult specialty just to impress a commitee.
